The work tells the story of Jane's early life, her experience at Lowood School and as a governess. Her refusal to accept Rochester's love on any but her own strictly moral terms is a passionate cry for independence.

"I have read this book several times since I was thirteen and at first I saw it as an escape book and every time I read it, I'm reminded of why I have such a close connection to it. Not only have always related to Jane the most as a literary protagonist, but I feel connected to the style, the setting, the characters and the relationship between Edward and Jane. I love that, despite its gothic setting, Jane and Edward do actually feel like two real people in a real relationship. I love the ambiguity of Bertha and how I can continue to question where she's from or whether she was, in fact, mad or not. It is easily my favourite book for its style, story and message."

" I have loved and adored this book since I first read it at age 16. Bronte draws the reader in and Jane represents the very best parts of humanity. Though it was written in a very different age, and perhaps Mr. Rochester has a few serious psychological issues, it is an absolutely incredible novel that you can't help but take to heart. "

" The bit of the book from when St. James found her the teaching job to almost the very end was pretty slow for me. But I absolutely loved the rest. The ending was a bit cheesy, but the characters deserved it and I enjoyed the way it all came together. "

" This was an amazing book. I am typically not a big romance-type fan, but Bronte pulls it off. The whit of the main character, her strengths, her hardships, and her version of "happily ever-after" are refreshing and original. "
