Publisher Description

One of the most passionate novels of its time, Jane Eyre derives its strength from the honesty and directness of its heroine. The first person narrative involves us right from the start, letting us into Jane's thoughts as she matures from rebellious child to passionate woman. Notice how social snobbery is condemned - particularly in the character of Aunt Reed and the conditions at Lowood 'Orphans Asylum'. Listen how the writer builds her climaxes - most notably in Rochester's famous proposal scene. Notice, also, how Jane rises above her unhappy beginnings to gain Rochester's love. And, finally, revel in the story's ending - one of the most moving conclusions to a love story ever written.

"It is amazing how time and consideration can change you perception of a book. When I first read 'Jane Eyre', I could not fathom how its heroine could give up security and marriage to stay true to God's laws. It did not make sense to me, and I riled against the suffering she went through for such (in my mind) absurd values. Only in the past year have I been able to appreciate Jane Eyre for the strong female character she is. Against a society that leaves her very little room to maneuver, her determination to stay true to her own values, refusing to be swayed even by those who love and wish to dominate her. Very few women of her time would dare, or even wish to write such a strong willed, independent female character, for which I adore Charlotte Bronte."

" A very good book that introduced themes never aforementioned to my mind. Also, the novel is , to my knowledge, the first introduction of both a male lead that is not a prince charming, and a female who is somewhat independent and headstrong. There are other things which made me enjoy this story but I cannot impart the knowledge without spoilers. So I shall settle with this. Jane Eyre is old english style written anti-romance novel that will have you thoroughly entertained until the end. "

" Most classic works of literature are great, but Jane Eyre is a touch more thrilling than most, and its ending is particularly poignant. Save for the last line and a superfluous supernatural touch, it's perfect. "
