“Playwright Christina Calvit, director Marsha Mason, and English actress Emily Bergl all dig deep to heighten and contemporize one of the most beloved and influential novels in the English language. How can listeners not be familiar with the love story between the orphaned, bright, and individualistic Jane Eyre and the proud, enigmatic Mr. Rochester? Where this adaptation and Bergl’s strong and perceptive vocal presence shine is in exploring the second half of the novel, when Jane must make hard choices between what is expected of an unattached nineteenth-century governess and what is in her heart. LA Theatre Works serves up another smart emotional roller coaster ride performed before a live audience.”

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) grew up in the isolated parsonage at Haworth, Yorkshire, where her father was curate. She and her sisters Emily and Anne thrived in fantasy worlds that drew on their voracious reading of Shakespeare, romantic, and gothic fiction. Charlotte was employed as a teacher and a governess before she began writing with her sisters. The Professor, her first novel, was rejected for publication until 1857, although Jane Eyre, published in 1847 under a pseudonym, achieved great success.
