The world's most popular and enduring superhero comes together with the talents of acclaimed novelist Tom De Haven to recreate the early years of the Man of Steel.
Opening with the young Clark Kent on a date, the novel takes an entirely fresh approach to the emergence of his superpowers and the start of his newspaper career, following him from rural 1930s Kansas across America to Hollywood in its golden age and then to New York City. He meets a worldly Lois Lane and conniving political boss Lex Luthor and begins his battles against criminal masterminds, mad scientists, and supervillains inspired by fascists.
This fun and fast paced novel of thrilling invention, heroic escapes, ill fitting costumes, and supersized, coming-of-age angst is sure to appeal to devoted fans.

"This would get three and a half stars if that option were available but it's a book where rounding up feels more appropriate than down. I understand why there was so little action involved and even appreciate it, but I'd still like a little more Superman or Clark and a little less Willi Berg. The title is even misleading as this is truly an ensemble piece that makes Superman an ancillary character in his own story. If anything, I hoped that it would build to a point where it becomes evident that Superman is needed by the city as opposed the way it plays out. It works, though, because Clark discovers himself as the reader does. DeHaven crafts an immigrant's tale and creates a vivid tale of the 1930's. The Clark Kent from the last chapter is the title character at his most interesting, and I would enjoy an entire book that truly focuses on that dude instead."

“Scott Brick gives a super performance…[He] smoothly handles the novel’s descriptive passages, loaded with historical and pop culture references to create an authentic sense of time and place. His characterizations are spot on…This is an audiobook not to be missed.”
— Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Tom De Haven’s realistic story explores how a nervous Superboy becomes a confident Superman in a very adult story…Brick’s trademark delivery, with sentences ending in upturned final syllables, works well in this story of a fumbling Clark Kent learning to shed his Smallville skin.”
— AudioFile“This is a thrilling re-invention of a pop culture legend, and Brick reads with great comic book panache. He employs long conversational pauses for dramatic effect and makes pulp fiction a pure delight.”
— Kliatt“De Haven…has added a sophisticated, well-rounded, and compelling addition to the Superman genre. In particular, he has an eye for authentic setting and character…proof that Superman’s appeal has withstood the test of time.”
— Bookmarks Magazine" Frustrating. Good parts but it dragged. It's aiming for some thing more ambitious than a mere adventure but it was a chore to go through at times. "
— Keon, 2/19/2014" Sometimes random library picks yield wonderful surprise reads; this was not one of them. Occasionally, "it's Superman!" delivered the goods: a tense, action-packed and faithful-to-the-comicbook retelling of Clark Kent's odyssey from Smallville, KS to meeting (and falling in love with) Lois Lane in NYC. More often than not, however, I found myself questioning the title of the book (shouldn't it be called "Where's Superman?" instead?) whenever it lapsed into over-lengthy character analyses of minor players or turned into a moody thought-piece trying to dissect Clark's psyche. Author Tom De Haven is a gifted writer, but sometimes his machinations waxed bombastic in favor of stylistic flourish, in lieu of meaty substance his protagonist(s) necessitated. "
— Snotchocheez, 2/18/2014" I thought this book was great, the author kept it interesting but still simple enough that it really felt like a novelization of a graphic novel...Which makes little sense to me kind of. Also? I think I'm in love with Lois Lane. I'm pretty sure, actually. "
— Rachel, 1/2/2014" I remember reading this book when it came out in 2005 or 2006 and really liking it. Alas, I'm hesitant to give it 5 stars because I really don't remember any of the details. This was a time in my life when I would never have considered picking up a comic book, but this novel had me thinking about Superman and American heroes in a new way. "
— Nancy, 12/29/2013" Well written, as always and a great adventure of a young Clark Kent/Superman. A must read. "
— Earl, 12/28/2013" A slightly different take on Superman's origin; he's more human. "
— Neal, 11/11/2013" Great Superman story. Having it take place in the 40's when Superman debuted gave this book a unique feel, unlike other Superman novels. "
— Mike, 11/5/2013" I read this several years ago. I mentioned it to a few comic book geeks I knew, but none of them expressed any interest in reading it. Even though you know what's going to happen, De Haven does a really good job of telling the story. I remember having a blast reading this book. "
— Evan, 10/23/2013" My anticipation for who and what Clark would become may have hindered my full enjoyment of this story. it lacked a big payoff. But the little moments do shine here. There's tons of charm. "
— Jane, 9/16/2013" I'm not sure why the author decided to write this, because he doesn't appear to like Superman and his mythology at all. As a result, the novel is a slog. "
— Pete, 9/16/2013" Very good book. The story of the dude before he became "The Dude". Tom De Haven is an excellent writer. A page turner from the start. "
— J., 3/21/2013" it sucks a big ol fat one, terrible. "
— Navajojim, 11/10/2012" Instant nostalgia. A coming-of-age story wrapped up in a superhero origin tale, this book features some very good writing and truly memorable moments. It seems ripe for a movie rendition but that isn't happening. "
— Matthew, 10/18/2012" This is a literary re-telling of the superman story set during the Great Depression. Clever. "
— Ira, 8/11/2012" This is one of my favorite books. I had my husband get it for me for Christmas. "
— Sarah, 6/17/2012" I really enjoyed this book while I was reading it, but now almost a year later I can't remember a single interesting or outstanding thing about it. "
— Hugh, 2/26/2012" I know nothing about Superman other than what I have seen in movies but I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Superman's formative years. It is well written and engaging. I hope DeHaven writes more about his idea of Superman. "
— Kasi, 9/30/2011" ngga baca sampe habis. sangat membosankan "
— Adhitia, 6/12/2011" Close to five stars, except for the robots. "
— Chris, 5/27/2011" I loved this novel and the author's sense of humor. Great POV on this iconic character. "
— Stacey, 4/16/2011" If anyone is making a new Superman movie, they should totally use this book! "
— Jennifer, 3/31/2011" Very good book. This is less about Superman and more about the period. I've definitely got a sense of the 1930's from this books. "
— Rich, 3/16/2011" A very entertaining re-imagining of the Superman / Clark Kent mythos set in the early to mid 20th century. "
— Dan, 1/15/2011" I was never a fan of Superman, but that changed after I read this book. "
— Kimchi, 9/24/2010" Excellent alternate telling of Clark Kent and his becoming Superman, meeting Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, etc. Quite enjoyable! "
— Sean, 7/17/2010" It's Superman! is an entertaining read that fills the gaps in Superman's history, the time between leaving the farm, maturing and coming to the big city. I'll probably read it again in a year or so... "
