"This book consists of separate stories that, in themselves, are engaging and evocative. But as a whole, this didn't hang together for me. There were connections between the narratives, yes, but not a satisfying cohesion. My impression is that the author intended more. Maybe I'll re-read it at some point to see if that changes my view. It might."

" Five different lives, maybe loosely connected, maybe not. I did not enjoy any of the stories. All were depressing. Maybe the writing was just to deep for me to comprehend. I wouldn't recommend this book. "

" This felt more like five short stories with a few tenuous links than a novel in 5 parts. Ho hum. Still waiting for another to rival Birdsong in quality. "

" The author presents the reader with 5 beautifully written novellas and leaves the reader to work out the links for themself. This encourages one to think about the issues of love, loss, betrayal and restoration and examine one's own attitudes. "

" Five quite absorbing stories but I kept waiting (unsuccessfully) for them to come together at the end. As I am not a fan of short stories, I felt the book to be quite frustrating - held together by a very loose common theme. Good writing but not memorable. "

" I don't really think it is a novel but a collection of short stories on a specific theme. I found the first story unbearable to read - it was so harrowing and upsetting. I liked the Joni Mitchell-type story the best. He is always so good when writing of heart break. "

" Frankly, I found this book to be totally annoying and only kept reading in hopes of some redeeming notion at the end. There was one, but it was weak. "

" Whilst this was a well written book, I didn't enjoy it as much as all the other Sebastian Faulks I've read. Some of the individual short stories captured my interest more than others, but overall I was a bit disappointed. Sorry. "

" Perhaps the best love story I've encountered resides at the very end of this collection, which otherwise feels monotonous despite the varied locations and eras of each story. Read it just for 'Anya' however, and you'll be glad you did. "
