Audie Award Nominee, Personal Development, 2013

It Worked for Me is filled with vivid experiences and lessons learned that have shaped the legendary career of the four-star general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. At its heart are Powell's Thirteen Rules - such as Get mad, then get over it and Share credit - that introduce his principles for effective leadership: conviction, hard work, and, above all, respect for others.

A natural storyteller, Powell offers warm and engaging parables with wise advice on succeeding in the workplace and beyond. Trust your people, he counsels as he delegates presidential briefing responsibilities to two junior State Department desk officers. Do your best - someone is watching, he advises those just starting out, recalling his own teenage job mopping floors in a factory.

Powell combines the insight he gained in the military and four presidential administrations with lessons from his immigrant-family upbringing in the Bronx and his training in the ROTC. The result is a powerful portrait of a leader who is reflective, self-effacing, and grateful for everyone he works with.

A brilliant and original blueprint for leadership, Colin Powell's It Worked for Me is bound to inspire, move, and surprise readers.

" A great American and his story. While I've disagreed with his politics, I admire GEN Powell's devotion to service of his country. Veterans and active-duty servicemen and women will enjoy many of his stories and observations of life while in uniform. "

" Starts strong with the General's philosophy and ends strong with his telling of the events surrounding the infamous WMD speech. Don't feel guilty about skimming the middle... "

" Very disappointed ... I thought this would be one of my favorites, and although he told some interesting stories, he seemed to contradict himself on what he wanted out of a subordinate. For example, a leader should be one who can recognize and solve an issue on his own before it becomes a problem and in the next example he would say as a leader he wanted to know all the facts as soon as they were discovered. I did like that he put a lot of trust in those at the bottom and gave them opportunity to advance. Not my favorite read. "

" I'm surprised how revealing Colin Powell is in this book. Enjoyed reading some parts that would once have been state secrets. Now with the Internet and wikileaks there are less secrets. Those interested in leadership would appreciate hearing this top leader speak. "

" Most of the leadership books I read deal with theory, which is great but tends to have the same information repeated throughout books. I really like Colin Powell's book because this deals with practice, not just theory, and it has more original content since it's so personal to his life. "
