Med Inden frosten vender Mankell et nyt blad i historien om Kurt Wallander. Den sag, der begynder en tidlig morgen med, at der sættes ild til en flok svaner på en sø uden for byen, er nemlig på én gang Kurts sidste og hans datter Lindas første. Netop færdig fra politiskolen får Linda job, af alle steder, i sin fars politikreds, Ystad, og der går ikke lang tid før hendes og en hel del andre menneskers liv er på højkant.

Det bliver nemlig ikke ved dyremishandlinger, og snart findes en ældre kvinde halshugget. Hendes foldede hænder tyder på religiøse motiver, og den teori underbygges, da en række 'menneskeofringer' finder sted i forskellige skånske landsbykirker. Det viser sig, at kristne fanatikere er på spil, og deres korstog er kun lige begyndt...
