Publisher Description

Lucy Scarborough is seventeen when she discovers that the women of her family have been cursed through the generations, forced to attempt three seemingly impossible tasks or to fall into madness upon their child’s birth. How can Lucy succeed when all of her ancestors have tried and failed? But Lucy is the first girl who won’t be alone as she tackles the list. She has her fiercely protective foster parents beside her. And she has Zach, whose strength amazes her more each day. Do they have enough love and resolve to overcome an age-old evil? Inspired by the ballad “Scarborough Fair,” this spellbinding novel combines suspense, fantasy, and romance for an intense and masterfully original tale. “Werlin reinforces her reputation as a master of the YA thriller...brilliant.” – Booklist starred review on The Rules of Survival “Mesmerizing.” – Publishers Weekly starred review on Double Helix

"I had no real idea of what this book was about -- the back cover just had the one-sentence reviews by other writers. I actually judged the book by its cover - I thought it was pretty - but in some way I thought it might be a western-type teen romance. Boy was I surprised! Well, there was a bit of a romance -- but there was also a curse, and insanity and the Elf Knight and a loving family and a cute young male neighbor. I read it all in one day and enjoyed it immensley. I recommend it to people wh want something gripping, yet very different."

" I really didn't enjoy this book. It was very slow-paced. I kept reading, hoping that things would pick up but they never did. I really wanted there to be some secret way of interpreting the song, but it was literal, and I was disappointed. "

" The Scarborough girls have been under a curse which causes them to become pregnant with a girl at 18, and then lose their mind after they give birth. Can Lucy figure out and do the three tasks set to break this curse? Unlike her ancestors, Lucy has her foster parents and Zach, her childhood friend, to help her through. Is it enough? This is a good read and will keep you turning the pages to find out. "

" I really liked the idea of this book. Actually, I did like the story, but I was not a fan of how it was laid out. One minute the book begins, and the next minute you're like "huh?" It goes 0-60 and it's so rapid. I absolutely loved the story, I just think it could have flowed so much better. "
