That stammer, those basset-hound eyes, that bone-dry wit: there has never been another comedian like Bob Newhart. His comedy albums, movies, and two hit television series have made him a national treasure and placed him firmly in the pantheon of comedy legends. Who else has a drinking game named after him And now Newhart puts his brilliant and hysterical world view on paper.

Never a punch-line comic, always more of a storyteller, he tells anecdotes from throughout his life and career, including his beginnings as an accountant and the groundbreaking success of his comedy albums and The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, which gave him fifteen years on primetime television. And he also gives his wry, comedic twist to a multitude of topics, including golf, drinking, and family holidays.

Today Newhart appears on Desperate Housewives, in hit movies such as Elf, and in theaters around the country. Reruns of his shows air constantly on Nick at Nite—have recently been released with great success for the first time ever on DVD. With this book, Bob Newhart gives his millions of fans a first ever opportunity to sample his unique brand of humor—including excerpts from some of his classic routines—on the printed page.

" Bob Newhart is very funny and very old, these facts are both evident in this book. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Eldaa | 2/15/2014

" This book is a really wonderful read. Newhart presents himself as such a likeable guy, I was perfectly happy to wander with him as he negotiates the entertainment industry and builds a career. A bit of a disappointment, however, it that many of his routines are reprinted verbatim. So, if you are familiar with those, the book looses about 25% of its volume. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Paul | 2/15/2014

" I listened to this book which is narrated by the author. I think that fact made it so much more authentic. Newhart is truly a funny, unassuming comic. Really a fun trip down memory lane. "

" Bob Newhart is great to listen to which I highly recommend doing with this book. While I'm sure the book would have still been good to read, I think listening to the audiobook in his own voice added something extra special to it. The book is part biography, part bits of some of his more popular routines. It's interesting and funny and was a thoroughly enjoyable read/listen. "

" I grew up watching Bob Newhart and he's always been a comedian that I love. This book was a short blip of his very successful life and it really felt like he was talking to you over coffee. Not stuffy, not boring, and definitely full of funny bits. My favorite parts were the routines that he included- so funny! "

" Wasn't as much name dropping in this Memoir, and though stories were out of order chronologically, it was still rather good. My dad introduced me to His early albums. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Mark Mallett | 2/4/2014

" Very enjoyable short read, organized as a bunch of chapters on different subjects but all focusing on Newhart's recollections on his life in comedy. "

" I guess I can't truly say I read this book since I did do some skimming. However, the reason I checked it out was because I saw a PBS special on Bob Newhart and this book was basically the written version of it, but not as good because you don't hear Newhart's trademark soft-spoken stammer or get to see all the clips of his shows. Instead, he tries to write out comedy bits, which, unfortunately, doesn't work all the time. It would probably be better if I had not seen that special. "

" Another great biography from a great comedic mind. If you are a Bob Newhart fan you will enjoy this. it is funny and takes you back to the good ol' days of comedy. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Muchsarcasm | 1/10/2014

" It's not really a memoir, just a collection of stories and anectdotes of how he broke into comedy and funny things that happened along the way. There's a surprising number of repeat stories, things he's told in interviews past. Still it's a nice light read from a very funny man. "

" An under-appreciated gem of a comic who had the first platinum comedy album, two hugely successful sit-coms, and now a book that reaffirms his 'aw shucks' approach to success. Sometimes nice guys finish first - it's just that they make less noise about it, so no one notices. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Maria | 12/10/2013

" This book provides the very enjoyably told story of both Bob Newhart's life and the art of his comedy. I highly recommend the audio book version, which is read by Newhart. Hearing his own story in his own voice is an absolute treat. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Leslie Jem | 12/7/2013

" Love Bob Newhart and his stories that he tells in this book. I found myself laughing in the middle of the night when I read. He tells of his early career and how he got started. Its hard to find a good comic who can tell a clean joke and he is great at it. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Barbara | 2/9/2011

" Bob is one of those things that's a family thing. Bob Newhart show was often on and I grew to love it and Newhart too. Loved the ending. It's more of a quiet funny, but still lovely. I watched Catch-22 because of it. Wonder if the albums would work or less compelling to a Gen-xer. Maybe Dvd. "

" Book on CD, read by the author. Newhart's dry style of comedy has always been a favorite of mine, and this did not disappoint.

I almost had tears running from my eyes as I heard at least one sketch that I hadn't heard before, or had forgotten about. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Joanmom | 10/10/2010

" Listened to this on tape read by the author; it's only 3 hours long which is a good thing because Newhart's stammering is pretty monotonous for that long. Some fun stories about his early days as a stand-up comedian and then TV personality. Might be better to read than listen to. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Nicole | 8/27/2010

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Mel | 8/22/2010

" I love Bob Newhart. I love his stand -up routines. I thought Newhart was a very funny TV series once they got past the first season. But....I don't love this book. Perhaps his humour doesn't translate well to the written word. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Karen | 7/16/2010

" I love Bob Newhart and loved this book just as much. I listened to him read his own book which only made it all the much better.
    Go Bob. "
