How Stella Got Her Groove Back is full of Terry McMillan’s signature humor, heart, and insight. More than a love story, it is ultimately a novel about how a woman saves her own life—and what she must risk to do it.
Stella Payne is forty-two, divorced, a high-powered investment analyst, mother of eleven-year-old Quincy, and she does it all. In fact, if she doesn’t do it, it doesn’t get done, from Little League carpool duty to analyzing portfolios to folding the laundry and bringing home the bacon. She does it all well, too, if her chic house, personal trainer, BMW, and her loving son are any indication. So what if there’s been no one to share her bed with lately, let alone rock her world? Stella doesn’t mind it too much; she probably wouldn’t have the energy for love—and all of love’s nasty fallout—anyway.
But when Stella takes a spur-of-the-moment vacation to Jamaica, her world gets rocked to the core—not just by the relaxing effects of the sun and sea and an island full of attractive men, but by one man in particular. He’s tall, lean, soft-spoken, Jamaican, smells of citrus and the ocean—and is half her age. The tropics have cast their spell and Stella soon realizes she has come to a cataclysmic juncture: not only must she confront her hopes and fears about love, she must question all of her expectations, passions, and ideas about life and the way she has lived it.

"I liked this book, but it's kind of depressing when you realize it's a true story and that they ended up getting divorced later. (I think I remember reading that he turned out to be gay, but I might be wrong about that.) Kind of ruins the miraculous love story aspect of the book. "

" I think this was at my ex-father-in-laws too? What's up with that? "
— Malbadeen, 2/15/2014" Funny and heart warming. "
— Jane, 2/10/2014" The book was an entertaining, sometimes touching read. I enjoyed the movie a *bit* more though, sorry to say. "
— Jenny, 2/8/2014" This, at first, seemed like a fun book. The author writes as if the reader was in her head, hearing her thoughts. Once I got used to the technique, I liked it. But an entire book of thoughts??? No thanks. Predictable. "
— Cynthia, 2/4/2014" Very well written- I loved the language of the first person narrative. "
— Samantha, 2/2/2014" Stephanie and I swapped this back-and-forth as we layed poolside in Jamaica. It was so fitting to read it while we were actually there. Good book. Great trip. "
— Erica, 1/27/2014" I had the pleasure of seeing the movie, which was great. I probably wouldn't read the book, although its a book that I will definitely add to my collection. "
— Shauna, 1/22/2014" I am not a fan of May-December romances, but McMillan gives this one a convincing aspect. "
— Sharon, 1/13/2014" This is the only book written by Terry McMillan that I didn't enjoy! I loved all the other books. "
— Carlise, 1/12/2014" Good read. Saw the movie first and fell in love, had to read the book, it did not disappoint. "
— Melissa, 12/24/2013" This is such a fun fast read! It's perfect for vacation. It makes you feel happy and it reads like butter. "
— Twylapumroy, 12/23/2013" This was a cute story about a 42 year old woman who goes to Jamaica and falls in love with a 20 year old Jamaican guy. Definitely a fluff read, but that was much needed after the last two books I read (non-fiction and filled with death). "
— Rachel, 12/20/2013" I read this book many years ago and I really enjoyed it. Great read! "
— LaTonya, 12/20/2013" Very close to the movie. I really enjoyed reading this one. "
— Ellenjsmellen, 12/16/2013" fun story of a (black)woman meeting a young hottie in jamaica and the sneers she gets as she finds herself again...with the young man. the unfolding love / romance between the two... "
— Vanessa, 12/15/2013" Sometimes it's a little unrealistic, as in Stella is too perfect and her flaws are too perfect, but it's a good book. "
— Brendygirl, 12/9/2013" Book was better than I thought it would be, but the ending reads like she was over her deadline and needed to finish. "
— Bridget, 8/2/2013" This book was okay. It's about Stella, a mom of one child, and a woman in her 40s who goes away on vacation. There she meets a younger man and the sparks begin to fly between the two. "
— Robin, 7/22/2013" I loved this book, I thought it was awesome. Happy ending and all! "

— Jessica, 9/1/2012" This was a quick read that made me laugh out loud multiple times. I aspire to be the main character if I were middle-aged, divorced, but still smokin' hot. Another novel turned movie I'll have to watch. "
— Angela, 8/22/2012" Much better than the movie. Entertaining in a chick-lit kind of way. "
— Sally, 7/20/2012" Read this awhile ago, and remember loving and devouring it. Just came to mind a few weeks ago, when I was telling my sister about it, and realized that I need to pick it up and read it again! "

— Carole, 6/23/2012" this is the worst book in the whole wide world. "
