The King family has moved into a strange old house. Could it be a dream come true—or a place of nightmares?
When the Kings move from LA to a secluded small town, fifteen-year-old Xander is beyond disappointed. He and his friends loved to create amateur films, but the tiny town of Pinedale is the last place a movie buff and future filmmaker wants to land.
But he, David, and Toria are captivated by the many rooms in the old Victorian fixer-upper they moved into—as well as the heavy woods surrounding the house.
They soon discover there’s something odd about their new home. Sounds come from the wrong directions. Prints of giant, bare feet appear in the dust. And when David tries to hide in the linen closet, he winds up in locker 119 at his new school.
Then the really weird stuff kicks in: they find a hidden hallway with portals leading to far-off places—in long-ago times. Xander is starting to wonder if this kind of travel is a teen’s dream come true . . . or his worst nightmare.

"I am not sure what I thought this book would be, but it turned out a little scary. I am not someone who really likes scary, I tend to imagine the scary things from a book or movie happening to me in real life so I usually stay clear. It got scary towards the end and I was already engrossed in the story, which was really good. So now I have to read all six books...darn. I mean yay for finding a good series, darn for being scared....eek!"

" A young adult book, for maybe 10-15 years old. Some violence no sex/romance. It was a treat i was intrigued in the mystery of this house they moved into, hidden in the woods. It's secrets thrilling and sometimes scary. I can see this becoming a very popular series. "
— Yodamom, 2/9/2014" ngeri-ngeri gimanaaa gitu, trus bacanya pas lagi "sial", kunci ketinggalan di kasur, jadi pas pulang kerja ga bisa masuk rumah. mana ujan deres, mana rumah gw ga ada tempat buat neduh yang enak. dan gw harus nunggu 3 jam sampe tante gw pulang. beneran serem bukunya. "
— Jia, 1/4/2014" Interesting beginning to a story of a house where rooms are not what they seem. Creepy without being horrific. Good horror novel for YA. "
— Karen, 12/29/2013" I can't believe I missed this series. I should have had these books in my classroom library years ago. I am now on a mission to find these books. I really enjoyed House of Dark Shadows. I listened to the audio version, which was very well read. The adventure and mystery worked nicely together. "
— Natalee, 12/27/2013" I downloaded this onto my nook since it was offered as one of B&N's Friday freebies. Unfortunately, it didn't really impress me. The writing is stilted and the characters are thin. Also, it took far too long to decide what kind of book it wanted to be, and then ended predictably with a cliffhanger. Which I see from looking at the sequels is not actually resolved in the second book, either. The whole book felt like buildup to the presumed sequels. "
— Erin, 12/27/2013" Very interesting fantasy book. I enjoyed it very mysterious and adventurous. "
— *~Sammy~*, 12/16/2013" I read this book in one day. Every time I finished a chapter, I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. "
— Kathryn, 12/13/2013" I, personally liked it. I had to read it for a Summer Reading thing for school. The Only one I thought was interesting but they also had The Graveyard Book. But thats beside the point. But yes I really liked the book. "
— Ryan, 11/23/2013" Great book, if you are into a mystery/fantasy book, I would recommend this to you "
— Sutton, 9/20/2013" Loved that it referenced Dark Shadows, Poe, etc. "
— Emily, 9/12/2013" Children's Book. I really enjoyed this intriguing tale, great premise. "
— puppitypup, 9/10/2013" This book is told from the narrators perspective and this helps with the exposition, rising action, climax, and falling action. You get the feelings etc. from the narrator. "
— Austin, 9/7/2013" I enjoyed this book. I happened upon it on a kindle search. Easy read and these young boys find thier new house to have surprise after surprise. "
— Lisa, 8/17/2013" Writing style was fine and the storyline seemed interesting, but the beginning wasn't enough to compel me to continue reading. "
— Gabi, 3/29/2013" I really liked this story. Can't wait to read the sequel! "
— Soccergypsy, 3/18/2013" Wanted to like this, but kept being disappointed. Great potential, but I dislike books where the parents are total idiots.Unbelievable that the parents in this one would knowingly expose their children to such danger. "
— Cindi, 2/28/2013" I really was liking this book until I started listening to Peter and the Shadow Thieves and then I was reminded what a really well written book is like. The concept of this book is entertaining though and I would be curious to know how the series progresses, but I probably won't read more of these. "
— Jesse, 2/2/2013" Sucked me in.. I found this book for free on my Kindle and after reading it I quickly searched for the other books in this series.. It borders on scary and suspenseful.. I could feel my heart rate rise in certain parts as my anxiousness for the characters got the best of me. "
— Tina, 11/28/2012" Enjoyable book but it lost me in the middle. The ending was not fair. LOL "
— SenoraG, 11/19/2012" Good easy read. Fast moving and imaginative. "
— Lawn2000, 7/5/2012" The first half of this book is freakin scary. Like leave the light on scary. Then there's a plot twist, and the second half is a page turner of suspense. For an upper middle grade book, not too bad! I was very pleasantly surprised. "
— Julie, 7/1/2012" Very suspenseful...definitely kept the attention of some students (which is often a challenge) "
— Sarah, 6/19/2012" Amazing story - draws you into the life of this family from page one. Couldn't put it down until I finished it. Loads of mystery and adventure. "
— Lyn, 4/19/2012" Very different from the usual teen fantasy. No vampires or werewolves, but plenty of action! Can't wait to start the next book and see what happens. "
— Olivia, 8/3/2011" Fun and interesting start to a new series. Interested in seeing where they go with it. "
— Vicky, 7/14/2011" I could not put the book down. "
— Paula, 5/19/2011" Very suspenseful...definitely kept the attention of some students (which is often a challenge) "
— Sarah, 5/10/2011" This was a good teen fiction read. Would share with my kids. "
— Sheila, 4/24/2011" It's not fair for me to hate on this book because it's written for kids, but I mean, seriously. What the hell. "
— Katie, 4/20/2011" It was a nice break from all the romance lovey-dovey (which can be good, don't get me wrong) crap you read in other books. I enjoyed it a lot! "
— Cindy, 4/16/2011" Loved this entire series! It's written for teens, but I was hooked from the first chapter of this book to the last chapter of the finale. I am praying he continues the series! "
— Marletta, 4/15/2011" Ok. I thought the concept and plot of this hook was really cool, but it was very predictable; I wanted more information on the history of the house. I hope in the 2nd book things will pick up because I have a problem with books that have a lot of unuseful filler:-( Hope it gets better!!! "
— MsBDiamondDiva1, 4/3/2011" Not a bad read. Different from what I am used to reading but I enjoyed a little diversity. I intend on reading the rest in this series. Eventually... "
— Natasha, 3/28/2011" I really liked this book and the storyline. I couldn't wait to start reading book 2! "
— Mandy, 3/21/2011" alex really wants to read this series but he thought it might be too scary for him so i told him i would read it first.

it is not scary but a mystery and fantasy book, i really enjoyed the quick read and i am moving on to book 2!! "
— Angela, 3/21/2011" A little slow and not much happened BUT I'm interested in the mystery of the house. What is its purpose? Where do the doors lead? How did it come to be? It's also nice to read a book where the family members actually love each other and get along. What a novel concept. "
