Publisher Description

It is 1946, and the eve of the harshest winter for a hundred years. Servicemen are pouring home from the war to a Britain beset by food and fuel shortages and a desperate housing crisis. Recently demobbed, Billy Greer has no intention of returning to his life in Somerset. But in an attempt to impress Annie, the woman he walked away from at the start of the war, he stays. As the country is brought to its knees by blizzards, the realities of immigration and propaganda in post-war life prove too hash for some.

" It's a long time since I read this! Do like her writing in general so guessing I enjoyed it - something about Polish guy staying after the war? "

" I enjoyed this book and learned many interesting things. However, the ending was unsatisfactory; it seemed to just end without resolution. "

" Light gentle easy read. Not the best of her books. Not a page turner: more a take it or leave it read "

" I read this en route to visit Michele in Florida and finished it just before the end of my visit. I have never read any Clare Francis before - it was an easy and pleasant read. I liked the Polish after war theme as I have always been interested in the sad fate of the Poles since I visited Poland. "

" I enjoyed this. I didn't realise what difficulties the Poles had in our country after the war. Recommended. "

" Slow start, but hard to pin down. Keeps you guessing 'til the end, but by then you don't really care. "

" Not as gripping as Wolf winter but still an enjoyable mystery. I enjoyed the quiet calm pace and the setting of the story in Norfolk. The characters weren't particularly rounded or full, but as a no-brainer I became involved in the story. "

" Pretty mediocre...I don't much like the style of emotional relationship-oriented crime novels, of which this is one. For the genre, it wasn't bad, but I can't provide much more praise than that. "
