Sitting on the porch with his dog, Mudge, Henry watches a man and a collie walk by. As the collie obeys the man's commands to sit, lie down, and stay, Henry looks at Mudge and thinks about the things Mudge knows how to do: drool, sleep, and jump up on company. So Henry decides to enroll Mudge in dog obedience school. On the first day, Mudge dances with the trainer; on the following days, Mudge learns commands. But will he learn enough to pass the final test? Henry wonders how many boxes of liver treats it will take. Written by Cynthia Rylant, who has won many honors including the Newbery Award for Missing May, the Henry and Mudge books are perfect for beginning readers. Full of the sunny adventures of a young boy and his enormous but good-natured dog, these stories gallop along at a frisky, comical pace.

"I used to adore these books when I was in second/third grade. The story was cute, the pictures were neat but the one thing that always bothered me about these books were the way they break down the sentences into lines. Sometimes it confused my little reader. Love that dog forever though."

" Even though it is for little kids I think that grown ups can love it to. I also think that the things that Henry and Mudge do are not just for kids and some teach things. "
— Phil, 4/6/2013" Another quick and easy Henry and Mudge book. Good for my 3.5 year old. He likes them but I can't imagine their going to be any kid's favorite. I would give them 3.5 stars if I could. "

— Horace, 3/8/2012" This is a pretty typical easy-to-read book about a boy taking his unruly large dog to obedience school. Mudge, the dog, learn to behave pretty well, unless a cat crosses his path. It should supply interesting material for beginning readers. "
— Barbara, 6/23/2010" Book is highlights the importance of family time. It is about a summer family camping trip which includes: hiking, animal watching, and star gazing. Makes me want to go camping. "
— Shellee, 6/1/2010" I read this book when I was in second grade. "
— Anna, 12/8/2008" Rebekah laughed outloud at the part where Mudge chews on the log, because that's all our Black Lab, Calvin, likes to do in our backyard - chew on sticks and logs. He has made an olympic sport of it. That, and we love to camp. "
