Posadas County, New Mexico has very few mean streets and no city-slick cop shop. But it has an earnest, elected Sheriff and his aging Undersheriff—William C. Gastner. Pushing sixty, widower Bill has no other life than in law enforcement—and doesn’t want one, even if he’s being nudged gently toward retirement. Then big time trouble strikes. A car full of teens, running from a stop by Deputy Torrez, goes airborne into a rocky outcrop, killing all five kids and revealing a package of cocaine under the seat. Has someone brought big-time crime to the county. Bill is now dealing with grieving parents—one of whom starts packing a gun. Then a second explosion of violence fells an undercover cop. Under pressure, the sheriff’s department pulls together to make a formidable team. Its weak spot may be Bill whose mind is too tough to crumble but whose body, long mistreated, gradually succumbs to stress. Ignoring all advice—and sense—he pilots the case to a final dramatic, midair confrontation where the fate of the killer—and the cop—will be decided….

"The cast of characters in the Posada Country stories would make for a great TV series. I'd never heard of this author and stumbled upon his books looking through the discount area of a site. Another author who writes just as good as a Grisham but gets none of the hype. You'll love all these books and wonder why Hollywood doesn't create more interesting content with gold like this waiting to be panned."

" A good read. This is my second Steven Havill book but the first of the Posadas County mysteries. Under sheriff Bill Gastner is an interesting hero: an overweight grandfather who doesn't get enough sleep. The mystery starts with a fatal car crash involving teenagers and a kilo of cocaine. One thing leads to another with an exciting conclusion. "
— Mary, 2/18/2014" I really enjoyed this book. The mystery is interesting although not too hard to figure out (at least I did which is unusual). However the protagonist is wonderful. It's great to see a 60 something man not grouching about the "young whipper-snapper", instead encouraging the young to learn from him. I'll be reading the rest of the stories in this series. "
— Patty, 2/12/2014" A good story about a small town and an aging cop. He not only dealing with the crimes, but also his health and if he can still do the job. Good book I thought. "

— Susan, 2/15/2013" This is a short (195 pages) tight little mystery set in the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico. The writing is fine and the mystery unfolds piece by piece to it's satisfying conclusion. Undersheriff Bill Gastner is crabby smart as a whip. I look forward to reading more of this series. "
— LeeAnne, 9/21/2012" Listened to this in audio. I really like thses rural police procedurals. This is the first in the series by Undersheriff Bill Gastner, set in New Mexico. 5 teenagers die in a car accident and drugs are involved. Gastner starts looking into the drug connection. Quite good. "
