An invitation for every woman who's ever felt she isn't godly enough, isn't loving enough, isn't doing enough. The life of a woman today isn't really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord's feet... but the daily demands of a busy world just won't leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him... yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. Then comes Jesus, into the midst of your busy life, to extend the same invitation He issued long ago to the two sisters from Bethany. Tenderly, He invites you to choose "the better part" - a joyful life of intimacy with Him that flows naturally into loving service. With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story, Joanna Weaver shows how all of us - Marys and Marthas alike - can draw closer to our Lord: deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.

"This is one of the best Christian books I've read, especially among the ones that are meant for group study and stuff. I love that it is practical and provides an actual plan forward rather than just telling you some things you should know. Weaver's writing is intelligent, creative, and engaging. A bit sappy or something at times, but I'm hard to please that way. Definitely an excellent read for anyone (not just women) who wants to balance work and worship."

“Joanna Weaver has a heart that sings. Whenever I’m around her, she makes me smile. Her voice rings out true and clear in Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. This book invites us to join in the chorus of daily communion with Christ, despite the pressures that threaten to silence us. Consider it as sheet music for your soul.”
— Robin Jones Gunn, bestselling author of the Glenbrooke series and the Christy Miller series“Balance. That’s what it is all about, and Joanna Weaver has found it, described it, and called us to this wonderful, practical work. If you have ever struggled with how you can find one quiet moment while longing for a deep holy communion or if you have been discouraged because neither seems possible, you will be challenged and blessed by Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World!”
— Jan Silvious, author of Foolproofing Your Life“With candor, humor, and passion, Joanna Weaver invites us to cultivate a ‘Mary heart’ that delights in time with God and assigns him top priority. Yet she doesn’t discard the service-oriented Martha. Instead, she wisely and practically models how to balance the Mary and Martha qualities in us all. I especially appreciate her thoughts on expressing lavish love—to God and to humanity.”
— Judith Couchman, Designing a Woman’s Life author and leader" Learning to balance worship and work--this book was helpful. "
— Camille, 2/19/2014" I really enjoyed this book! I had it sitting on my bookshelf for a few years and finally got around to reading it! It was encouraging and well written. The title makes it sound more geared toward women, but I think ANYONE would get something out of this book since it deals with balancing service and worship; spending intimate time with the Lord; and examining your heart. "
— Jennifer, 2/2/2014" Great book to help you slow down and spend time with God. "
— Christy, 1/27/2014" This was an excellent book. I read this with a bible study group at my church and grew spiritually. We plan to read her next book, Having a Mary Spirit, this Fall. I highly recommend this book for someone who is trying to place Jesus first in their busy life. "
— Liz, 1/17/2014" Used this as a year-long book discussion group study. Not my favorite choice content-wise, but it is very nicely laid out for discussion purposes with questions included in the back. The content includes very traditional Christian concepts which is ok, but didn't 'stretch' me in any personal way. "
— Gloria, 1/7/2014" I really enjoyed this book when I read it in 2003 it really helped me evalute how much I am about doing things for Jesus and not just being. "
— Sharon, 12/16/2013" Good basics, which I needed as a reminder. Yet I finished it wanting more. That's probably more my own fault; there really isn't a "formula" for having a close relationship with God, per se. In the end, it was a good enough read, gave me things to think about and a few things to try and it wrapped up nicely. "
— stacie, 11/27/2013" A truly life changing book. This is one I'm going to have to buy and read over and over. "
— Lisa, 11/20/2013" Loved it!! Just last week I looked back to the discussion we did online of this book and it refreshed my memory. I learned a lot about myself and how I can better serve God and others. "
— Theresa, 11/12/2013" I skimmed this, and it was kind of nice, but it wasn't compelling enough to make time for it. "

— Janie, 7/20/2013" I liked this book; however, I did not like her perspective on Eve and the events in the Garden of Eden. "
— Lora, 6/10/2013" This was not an easy read. I think it was meant more for a bible study especially after seeing the bible study companion in the back of the book. :-) It definitely made me think! "
— Niki, 12/8/2012" Interesting read. The first half was much better than the final chapters. Spiritual message with helpful lists and action items. Well annotated with scriptural references. Very extensive discussion questions included. "

— Tessa, 8/16/2011" I did this as a bible study at church. A very good book. I learned that I do not need to be perfect but just need to strive to be more of a Mary. I need to strive to sit at Jesus feet. This is a process. "
— Sharon, 7/16/2011" Good reminder to not get so caught up in "doing" that we lose focus of what is important. And not to feel we personally have to do everything. "
— Janis, 6/4/2011" not ready to give my review yet! "
— Joyce, 5/4/2011" Overall, a good read. Not a heavy duty book, but easy to read a chapter at a time, with a good "motif" for each section that can be practically applied. "
— Alix, 4/3/2011" I enjoyed this book, especially the part about Mary emptying her alabaster jar at the Master's feet. It was insightful into the balance between service and intimacy. "

— Jean, 12/24/2010" Given to me by a priest of my church, as she led a women's spiritual book club on this and related topics. So far, a great guidebook for women, even if God is not a major focus in your life - you can draw great life guidance that is spiritually focused. "
