Publisher Description

He was too imperious, too masterful, too much inclined to think that all things should be made to go as he would have them. Thus Trollope describes his hero Harry Heathcote, a settler and sheep farmer in the untamed bush of Australia in 1871. However, Harry has made enemies. In seeking always to act in the honourable fashion he cannot bend and embrace the weaknesses of others. A group of ex-convicts and disgruntled ex-employees threaten to burn his land and ruin him. Harry fights to protect his family and all he has worked for, despite his fears and self doubt and the apparent recalcitrance of a neighbour, Medlicot, a 'Free Selector' from the home country. Will his problems be resolved? Will he learn from his experiences? - Well this is a Christmas story!

" This was not one of Trollope's best, but it is short so it may be a good introduction to Trollope if one has an interest in reading him. It was about the Australian Bush in the late 19th century, so that is interesting. "

" My least favorite by far of all Trollope novels I've read, this is a simple story set in the Australian bush with very few likable characters. Maybe I'm just yearning for the county of Barset and the robust characters that reside there. "

" Fairly slight though entertaining Christmas story. The geography is a bit off in places "

About Anthony Trollope

Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) grew up in London. He inherited his mother’s ambition to write and was famously disciplined in the development of his craft. His first novel was published in 1847 while he was working in Ireland as a surveyor for the General Post Office. He wrote a series of books set in the English countryside as well as those set in the political life, works that show great psychological penetration. One of his greatest strengths was his ability to re-create in his fiction his own vision of the social structures of Victorian England. The author of forty-seven novels, he was one of the most prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era.
