Publisher Description

Debut novelist Karen Healey taps Maori mythology for this fresh spin on the fantasy genre. Seventeen-year old Ellie Spencer has a crush on the cute and mysterious Mark. That's the normal part of her life. But something terrifying also haunts Ellie and her community. People are being killed-and their eyes are being removed. Ellie soon learns two shocking truths. First, Mark is part patupaiarehe, the Maori equivalent of a fairy. Second, a war is brewing. ". Healey pulls readers in immediately with Ellie's funny, occasionally profane and often self-deprecating voice."-Kirkus Reviews

" This just isn't my type of novel. Fans of paranormal and mythological fiction would probably like it better. "

" This urban fantasy book almost read like a high fantasy for me since everything I know about New Zealand was learned from multiple viewings of Lord of the Rings. Despite the fact that I had to run to Wikipedia every five minutes while reading GUARDIAN OF THE DEAD, I really enjoyed it. The author did a great job of weaving together several different mythologies and creating multi-layered characters. "

" This is an urban fantasy which is not, in fact, about werewolves, vampires, or zombies. It draws on Maori mythology instead, a whole fascinating mythos I knew nothing about. "

" This book just seemed like a disaster to me. In the beginning, it was really interesting and seemed like it would make for a great read. About half way through, it seemed to just do a flip flop, and got pretty cheesy and just all together really confusing. "

" This was a great new modern edgy fantasy title, set in New Zealand & using Maori legends as the basis for the supernatural elements. I liked it because it was something new & different in the dark fantasy genre! "

" The earthquake plot ends up being kind of creepy after real-life events. I still really dislike the white mask cover, although at least it turns out to be plot-related. The up-the-nose shot is just uncalled for and totally off-putting. "
