The summer before Troy Stotts turns seventeen, his mother dies. Troy and his father barely speak, mostly communicating instead by writing notes on a legal pad by the phone. Troy spends most of his time with his closest friends: Tom Buller, brash and fearless, the son of a drunk; Gabe Benavidez, smart enough to know he’ll never take over the family ranch; and Gabe’s sister Luz, whose family overprotects her, and who Troy has loved since they were children. Troy and his friends don’t want trouble. They want this to be the summer of what Troy calls “ghost medicine,” when time seems to stop, so they won’t have to face the past, or the future. But before the summer is over, their paths will cross with people in dangerous and fateful ways. Troy and his friends want to be invisible. Instead, they will become what they least expect–brothers, lovers, heroes, and ghosts.

"This is the best young adult book I've read this year. I don't even want to call it "young adult" because it is so much more impressively written than everything else I've read in that genre over the past eleven months. I am very much looking forward to reading Andrew Smith's other novels."

" I think this book has a perfect first chapter. Though the rest of the book lags in a few places plot wise, Smith's characterization and creation of setting are very strong. "
— Cynthia, 2/19/2014" It was pretty good...There wasn't much plotline to this book, but it had some deep thoughts. It wasn't supernatural. It had good characters in an modern-day western setting. "
— Maggie, 1/26/2014" I liked the book ghost medicine because of the way Troy Scotts had to overcome tragedy in his life. Troys mom died when he was just a mere 17 and troy had to live with his father who was an alcoholic. Troy got a job with his crushes dad to help support him and his dad. "
— Theisen, 12/28/2013" Is something wrong with me? I just couldn't get into this book. It was so "blah" for me. The writing style did nothing for me, and the characters seemed very flat. I don't know, maybe I'll pick this up later when I have time. "
— Annelida, 12/17/2013" A good YA book for males. Although I thought there were a few too many slow spots in the book, I like the story and the protagonist. "
— Sharon, 11/30/2013" Although it started out slow, this book was fantastic! It's a love story, a cowboy story, a horse story, and a "Stand By Me" story all rolled into one. Very realistic and moving. "
— Samantha, 11/8/2013" I tried but I can't keep my head in it. Perhaps it's the wrong time for this book or maybe it's just wrong for me. "
— Anji, 8/17/2013" This is the only Young Adult Western I've ever seen. I think I really like this genre afterall. "
— Jennifer, 5/31/2013" This was a good coming of age book. Friends that are on one side of the track and the bullies on the other. Horses, best friends and first loves, and losses. "
— Cheryl, 3/7/2013" This is a wonderful story of friendship. It is set in a gorgeous setting with snakes, mountain lions, goats, and horses. I liked this story a lot, but the beginning was slow, and it took some time for me to truly enjoy the book. "
— Ricki, 1/17/2012" One of the best books I've ever read!! "
— Theresa, 12/26/2011" "That summer, we all had the ghost medicine that made us vanish and fade in ways we never thought, never saw. Anyway, it was what we wanted. And I guess that's how all boys die." - Page 125 - wow "
— Kari, 7/15/2011" it was really sweet and well natured. Havent read a good down to earth book in awhile, glad i came across it. "
— Olivia, 4/28/2011" For realistic fiction this book is really good. It seems realistic fiction never has enough action. "
— Darryl, 4/2/2011" This was a good coming of age book. Friends that are on one side of the track and the bullies on the other. Horses, best friends and first loves, and losses. "
— Cheryl, 2/25/2011" "That summer, we all had the ghost medicine that made us vanish and fade in ways we never thought, never saw. Anyway, it was what we wanted. And I guess that's how all boys die." - Page 125 - wow "
— Karilibrary, 2/16/2011" This book was odd, confusing, and slightly disturbing. I didn’t really like it. It was slightly disturbing with the violence, and the nudity. I really kind of wish I hadn’t read this book. "
— cassie, 1/1/2011" good YA! 3 teen boys, 1 girl, a bunch of horses and a villain. Admire Andrew Smith for how he brought out the close friendship between the boys. "
— B.J., 11/5/2010" Heavy duty book on growing up. thrre boys and a girl form an unbreakable bond over time. While thier bond survives, others do not. "
