Publisher Description

A New York Times bestseller! In the first of three official tie-in novels to the hugely successful videogame from Microsoft and Epic Games, the last human survivors of a vicious alien attack fight a pivotal battle for the fate of mankind. As kids, the three of them were inseparable; as soldiers, they would be torn apart. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fought alongside Dom’s elder brother Carlos at Aspho Fields in the epic battle that changed the course of the Pendulum Wars. There’s a new war to fight now, a war for mankind’s very survival. But while the last human stronghold on Sera braces itself for another onslaught from the Locust Horde, ghosts come back to haunt Marcus and Dom. For Marcus—decorated war hero, convicted traitor—the return of an old comrade threatens to dredge up an agonizing secret he’s sworn to keep. As the beleaguered Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments take a last stand to save mankind from extermination, the harrowing decisions made at Aspho Fields have to be relived and made again. Marcus and Dom can take anything the Locust Horde throws at them—but will their friendship survive the truth about Carlos Santiago?

"This book offers a rich look at the world only hinted at in the Gears of War games. I found out about this book completely by accident and fell in love with it. THe only thing that I can say that comes close to being a criticism, is that the bouncing back and forth in time (indicated by headings at the beginning of relevant sections) was really confusing, right at first. But that didn't detract from a truly amazing work."

" If you are familiar with the Gear of War video games, you will like this book. I listened to the audio book, though, and just be forewarned that it takes a bit of concentration to listen to because the story goes back and forth between 3 different time periods. Good story, though and a lot of good background info on the characters and their experiences together. "

" As a standalone story this may not hold up as well than if you're a fan of the game. However, anyone who is of the latter stripe will find that the book weaves two stories about the past and present lives of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago while bridging the gap between Gears of War 1 & 2, as well as answering some questions (and perhaps a little bit of retconning) about the universe canon. " Marcus and Dom are back with Dom's brother Carlos. Except their not fighting the locust their fighting rebels. While there are some post Gears of War scenes most of it is Pendulum war era. Marcus fights alongside lots of new faces and some old ones as well. With Dom as a commando and Marcus as a grunt they have two different missions to get the Hammer of Dawn blueprints. Will the get the plans or get discovered "
