“Moore highlights individuals who distinguished themselves in the war, drawing on previously unpublished materials from individual soldiers and black platoons. Moore chronicles the bravery of the troops as well as their struggles for equality at home, where they continued to be treated as second-class citizens.”

“A rare, thoughtful, and easily readable account of America’s invisible soldiers. This book speaks for the many thousands of men and women patriots whose stories remain untold.”
— James McBride, author of The Color of Water“Thomas Penny’s narration is perfect. He comes across as historian, son, soldier, and activist, fluidly changing personas. Penny breathes life into all of the men and women who so courageously fought for their country's freedom, the benefits of which were denied them because of racism.”
— AudioFile“This near-patriotic paean offers the respect not found in other recent works on blacks in the U.S. armed forces. Highly recommended for collections on black, military, or modern U.S. history.”
