Hornung was born in Middlesbrough, England in1866. He lived the majority of his life in England and France, but the two years he spent in Australia came to be an experience that colored and influenced much of his written works. His most famous character, A. J. Raffles, the gentleman thief, was first introduced in a short story published in Cassell's Magazine in 1898. The Raffles stories were well received in his time and remain popular today.

About E. W. Hornung

Ernest William Hornung (1866–1921) was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentlemen thief in late ninteenth-century London. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.
