A remarkably frank, deeply moving, and inspiring memoir by Jai Pausch, whose husband, Randy, wrote the bestseller The Last Lecture while battling pancreatic cancer.
"Jai is such a giver that she often forgets to take care of herself," Randy Pausch wrote about his wife. "Jai knows that she’ll have to give herself permission to make herself a priority."
In Dream New Dreams, Jai Pausch shares her own story for the first time: her emotional journey from wife and mother to full-time caregiver, shuttling between her three young children and Randy’s bedside as he sought treatment far from home; and then to widow and single parent, fighting to preserve a sense of stability for her family, while coping with her own grief and the challenges of running a household without a partner.
Jai paints a vivid, honest portrait of a vital, challenging relationship between two strong people who faced a grim prognosis and the self-sacrificing decisions it often required. As she faced life without the husband she called her “magic man,” Jai learned to make herself a priority to create a new life of hope and happiness—as she puts it, to “feel a spark of my own magic beginning to flicker.”
Dream New Dreams is a powerful story of grief, healing, and newfound independence. With advice artfully woven into an intimate, beautifully written narrative, Jai’s story will inspire not only the legions of readers who made The Last Lecture a bestseller, but also those who are embarking on a journey of loss and renewal themselves.

A brave and beautiful book. Dream New Dreams grabbed my heart from the opening page and didn't let go until its uplifting end. Jai Pausch is a stirring example of the power of life to triumph over any challenge. Bravo.
— Bruce Feiler, bestselling author of Walking the Bible and The Council of Dads" I didnt realize b/4 I bought this book that it was more of a book that a caregiver would find more helpful. I was awed and inspired by the imense talent and intelligence of Randy Pausch and his last lecture that captivated america of a man dying of cancer and trying to raise a family and live a life with his mrs right. I liked the parts that focused on Randy and how they met and the kids and all didnt realized how much money Randy had socked away and how frugel he was but this was a god send to Jai but I dont know that she realized it soon enuf that many women that have a husband die have to take care of there own kids alone and go back to work fortuneately Jai didnt due to insurance $, last lecture books and how Randy struggled to do as much promoting b4 he died as possible so it would help his family later. She should be more thankful that she got to have a nanny, go off to Europe etc and meet another man only a few yrs after Randy is gone so for me I struggled to give it 3 stars as much as I wanted to read it and learn about Randy Pausch all i learned is that his wife was not what I thought she was and when the book ended I said to my husband she just didnt appreciate enuf what she had to b able to live like the rich and famous all due to Randy! Read it just dont expect what I did! "
— Maria, 2/9/2014" A meaningful read for anyone who has been a care giver for a terminally ill friend or family member. Jai is the wife of Randy Pausch whose "Last Lecture" went viral after being posted on youtube. Randy died of pancreatic cancer at 46 yrs old. "
— Cheryl, 1/28/2014" Terrible!!!! I almost couldn't finish it but I just kept hoping it would get better, but it didn't. The author lacks personality and is whiny. Parts of the book that I was longing for another widows wisdom were completely lacking. She even made her dying husband seem like a cold unlikeable person. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors, but The Last Lecture made him seem like an amazing person and a great husband and father. This book did not. "
— Mary, 1/21/2014" Interesting story about Jai's life after her husband Randy Pausch (Last Lecture) died. "
— Marilyn, 1/14/2014" Very touching book, from the point of a caregiver of a family member with cancer. "
— Michelle, 12/10/2013" It was interesting and revealing to get the other side of the story of Randy Pausch from his wife and care-taker. Hers is actually the better account in my humble opinion. "
— Cynthia, 11/13/2013" reading it made me look on a positive side of life..stop complaining and know what you want and believe that you'll succeed.. "
— Kathy, 10/23/2013" A very good book for anyone losing or having lost a loved one. "
— Phyllis, 7/31/2013" This book was an interesting background to Randy's now-famous story, but not quite as inspirational. Primary caregivers would find it very interesting. "
— Robyn, 7/15/2013" the author, jai pausch, describes her life as a caregiver to her husband Randy Pausch who wrote the Last Lecture as they battle pancreatic cancer "
— Melissa, 4/29/2013" I am almost finished with Daughters for a Time. I am looking forward to reading Jai Pausch's book. I just loved The Last Lecture!! "
— Lisa, 4/25/2013" The pain of losing a spouse coupled with three small children while being the sole caregiver is a huge responsibility. This is honest and searing. I felt like I was there the whole time. Brave, memorable. "
— Robin, 4/16/2013" Touching story on what Jai went through with her cancer-stricken husband. A bit whiny at times though. "
— Priscilla, 9/20/2012" This was a really great book. I was so touched by her honesty and candor in discussing her husband's illness and death. She did an amazing job bringing the reader with her on her journey. "
— Sandi, 9/13/2012" Very quick read and enjoyable at that. Jai is a very brave woman left to solider on with three young children after her husbands untimely death. "
— Katie, 7/10/2012" I was so inspired by Jai Pausch while her husband, Randy, was dying of pancreatic cancer. Her words came back to me again and again when my husband was so very ill and after his death. Doesn't matter if the illness is cancer or something else. Heartfelt, moving, and hopeful. "
