A young Englishman is bound for the remote castle of an obscure count whose estates are folded deep in the mountains of Transylvania. He travels by carriage, staying the nights at rustic inns while time is frozen in a winter that knows no release. Heavy snows bog the road, slowing and finally stopping the carriage. Wolves suddenly materialize from the forest, terrifying horses and passenger. Only the driver remains impassive. By superior will, he forces the animals back. The travelers continue deeper into the darkness, into the woods, and into the unknown....

First published in 1897, Dracula has become synonymous with perversion and evil.

" I may have enjoyed this book more if I hadn't been reading it for a class. For me, I feel like it was pretty slow, probably because of how many stories seem to be happening. I can see how this would have been incredibly popular when it was first released as no one would have known about vampires yet. However, because I know most of the vampire lore, it didn't come as a surprise to me when things would happen. It was kind of interesting to see where the lore all began though, so I guess I got something out of it. "

" This book is very creepy and great in the same way. They have the mysteries that make people think wow and how. "

" I have to say I found it a bit of a disappointment. It was really interesting to see the origins of all the vampire mythology - the garlic (flowers, though, not bulbs!), crucifixes, piercing the heart (not necessarily with a stake) and not being powerful in the daytime (although sunlight did nothing to him other than render his super-powers useless!). I found it a bit boring, though, and there was far too much waffling. I found Van Helsing's weird manner of speaking annoying, rather than charmingly European. I don't know what I was missing but I didn't really enjoy it very much. Plus the end was really anti-climactic. "

" What a great read! I loved how it is written in the format of journals so we get to see the perspectives of several of the characters. I think one of my favorite parts was Van Helsing describing the conversation at the docks where there was much blood and bloom! This was a fabulous story! "

" I only now understood how Twilight and such have changed true vampire stories. Dracula is very descriptive that leaves reader in vivid pictures and the diary format completes the book. We get know what, how characters of the book feel. "

" While Dracula might be one of the slowest reads of all time, the language is simply to die for! I have to admit that while the story is very interesting, the actual language of the book is what I really read it for. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lynn Dee | 7/29/2012

" I enjoyed this book more at the beginning than towards the end and I can say the same thing about Van Helsing. He was funny and charming at first but his manner of speaking becomes mildly annoying. However, it is nice to finally know the original story of Dracula. "
