Publisher Description

From deep in the heart of his eighteenth century English manor, millionaire Sir Adrian Beauclerk-Fisk writes mystery novels and torments his four spoiled children with threats of disinheritance. Gathering them all together for a family dinner, he announces his latest blow - a secret elopement. Within hours, eldest son and appointed heir Ruthven is found cleaved to death by a medieval mace. And soon Sir Adrian himself is found slumped over his writing desk - an ornate knife thrust into his heart. Trapped amid leering gargoyles and stone walls, every member of the family is a likely suspect. Using a little Cornish brusqueness and brawn, can St. Just find the killer before the next-in-line to the family fortune ends up dead?

"Known as a send up of English mysteries, this first St. Just mystery is just that. An old English "pile" loaded with some authentic antiques as well as objects of garish taste, a mean tempered writer of mysteries plots revenge on his children and most of the rest of the people surrounding him. A surprise solution (actually the only disappointing part of the book) doesn't quite come off for me, but don't let that stop you. Worth reading."

" Ok...I love Agatha Christie and this seemed to be of the same genre but I could not get interested in this book. It was very slow moving to me. I purchased it at my local used book store for one dollar so I am going to list it on Paperback Swap and be done with it. Maybe someone else will enjoy it. "

" This book is a very slow read. It is the author's first attempt at a murder mystery, so I believe her next one may be better. The murder's resolution was explained too quickly at the end for my taste. "

" this was a prototype cozy mystery - enjoyed the characters immensely in the first 3/4ths of the book, but the end was quite extra ordinary with many twists and contrived circumstances. This book deals with a cozy mystery writer, but not an easy man to please or be with, and interactions between himself, ex-wife, current wife and his 4 children. The mystery starts when the first son is killed, and this is soon followed by father's murder. "

" This book is an over-the-top spoof of mysteries. I thought it was a very funny read. All the old devices of mysteries are here in force. The red herrings, the improbable ending, the big reveal with all participants in place are all part of this deranged romp. I like it! "

" Not bad, not great. As a warning, the ending left me cold. I don't like it when the murderer turns out to be someone you couldn't have guessed because of a wild past you didn't know about until the last five pages. Unfulfilled. "

" This book was disappointing. I heard so much about it, and it won a Malice Grant. I thought it was so-so. It suffered from cardboard characters, and a denoument that was not interesting. I just didn't care. "

" Disappointing--recommended by a writer whom I like very much. Weird how tastes overlap, or don't. This was a sort of spoof on classic British country house murders, but there was no character development. I find it's hard to like a book without some engagement with the people in it. "

" I would love to shout that Christie lives but I fear a firing squad, so I'll simply say Death of a Cozy Writer was a leisurely winding starter of a book that turned classic and clever. I can't wait to read the next. A 4.5 rating. "

" I can't say this fits my definition of a "cozy" mystery but I can say that I didn't enjoy it. There are no likeable characters and the humour feels forced. The whole thing was rather dull. "

" This had a good mystery plot but seemed at times more interested in poking fun at the cozy mystery theme than being a mystery. Actually not really sure that it was not supposed to be a homage to classic cozy mysteries or a parody, just not comedic enough to be a parody. "
