Publisher Description

Ray Bradbury's moving recollection of a vanished golden era remains one of his most enchanting novels. Dandelion Wine stands out in the Bradbury literary canon as the author's most deeply personal work, a semi-autobiographical recollection of a magical small-town summer in 1928. Twelve-year-old Douglas Spaulding knows Green Town, Illinois, is as vast and deep as the whole wide world that lies beyond the city limits. It is a pair of brand-new tennis shoes, the first harvest of dandelions for Grandfather's renowned intoxicant, the distant clang of the trolley's bell on a hazy afternoon. It is yesteryear and tomorrow blended into an unforgettable always. But as young Douglas is about to discover, summer can be more than the repetition of established rituals whose mystical power holds time at bay. It can be a best friend moving away, a human time machine who can transport you back to the Civil War, or a sideshow automaton able to glimpse the bittersweet future. Come and savor Ray Bradbury's priceless distillation of all that is eternal about boyhood and summer.

"I loved this book for the writing alone. What it had to say was enjoyable and nostalgic, but the way it was said was so wonderful that I must give it five stars. Not a page turner, but I'm sure that was on purpose. Bradbury was truely masterful. A possible bookclub gem, especially because I'm sure some people would hate it and thus provide for a very interesting discussion."

" Let me start off by saying, I hate Ray Bradbury. I dislike his writing style. If Orwell said to cut out unnecessary words from your writings, Bradbury wanted to add more words. He spends an awful lot of time saying nothing while trying to say everything. The theme of the book is change. It takes place in the summer of 1928. Irony? People die, people have to deal with death, people have to deal with change. It seems like the book leads up to something when in the end it led up to nothing. This being said there were enjoyable parts of the book but they were too infrequent to recommend Dandelion Wine. "

" There were intermittent brilliantly insightful moments on aging and mortality. The narrative seemed too disconnected and fragmented as Bradbury jumps from character to character. Definitely not as engrossing as Something Wicked This Way Comes. "

" This short novel is said to be a semi-autobiographical work of "normal" fiction by the great science fiction writer. It takes place in 1928 in a small town in Illinois. It's somewhat of a nostalgic look at the simpler life in times gone by. Wine made from dandelion petals and citrus fruit is a metaphor for packing the joys of life into a bottle. I enjoyed the light feel of this book as a nice diversion from "heavier" reading. "

" Well written. However it wasn't especially entertaining. I had hoped it would be the sort of book I would have liked to read when I was 12 but it wasn't. The main character was too introspective to be a real kid. I probably shouldn't knock it for not being what I expected but what can I say? "
