Cassandra Clara was born in 1973. Her real name is Judith Rumelt. She has written a number of books in the young adult fiction genre, and is best known for her series The Mortal Instruments. Born in Iran, her parents were a business professor and an author, respectively. Her grandfather was famed film producer Max Rosenberg. Though Clare is Jewish, she does not consider herself or her family religious. She has worked at numerous entertainment magazines and tabloids and began writing fan fiction of the Harry Potter series and The Lord of the Rings. Clare lives in Massachusetts with her husband and three cats.
