She makes her way as Matron's errand girl, her closest companions the mysterious cats that trail her shadow. Only when she begins a forbidden flirtation with the city's handsome young courier does she let herself imagine a life outside the walls. Until one by one, girls around her start to die.
Before she becomes the next victim, Nisha decides to uncover the secrets that surround the girls' deaths. But by getting involved, Nisha jeopardizes not only her own future in the City of a Thousand Dolls—but also her life.

"I was going to give this book 4/5 until I got to the ending. The climax/catharsis was so emotionally satisfying it surprised tears to my eyes. The author did a superb job of building the mystery and establishing a line of red herrings that draws the reader off the scent every bit as much as it does the heroine. Just when you think you know where the story is going along all-too familiar lines, its twists unexpectedly and takes you with it. Finished this book in less than a day and stayed up way, way too late, just to find out whodunit."

— Cinda Williams Chima, New York Times bestselling author“Set in a magically isolated Empire, Forster’s well-crafted story and confident prose are rich, packed with small details that immerse readers in her sumptuously imagined world.”

— Nikki, 1/14/2014" Definitely the book I anticipate MOST for 2013 (so far). :| "
— Bookphilia, 11/29/2013" This was a very cute book. It does have the "b" word in it once. I liked the characters and the mystery all lumped into a little fantasy as well. Letting my older girls read it. "
— Tammy, 11/20/2013" I wish there was more, I didn't want it to end. "
— Jacqulyn, 10/23/2013" characters lacked development... imagery was nice. it wasn't horrible. But also far from exceptional. "
— Melina, 10/17/2013" This was an enjoyable, quick read. I liked the main character and the description of the different houses within the city was quite interesting. The city is a place for orphan girls to learn a trade but the option for them to be purchased leads to some problems. "
— Jenny, 9/28/2013" I loved this book as soon as I began it. The world Miriam Forster creates is beautiful and mysterious and luscious, a wonderful place to lose yourself in. Lovely stuff. "
— C.J., 7/13/2013" this is really a 3.5 book for me. it kind of felt like a big intro to the series but also a stand a lone, but I'm excited to live in this world some more! "
— Stacey, 7/8/2013" Actually really enjoyed this one. "
