By the end of World War I, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel had revolutionised women's dress. But dress was the most visible aspect of more profound changes she helped to bring about. During the course of her extraordinary journey, from abject poverty to a new kind of glamour, she would help forge the idea of the modern woman. Unearthing an astonishing life, this remarkable biography shows how the most influential designer of her century became synonymous with a rebellious and progressive style.

Her numerous liaisons, whose most poignant details have eluded previous biographers, were the stuff of legend. Witty, strange, mesmerizing, Chanel became muse, patron, or mistress to some of the century's most celebrated artists, including Stravinsky, Picasso, and Dali.

" I am having a hard time differentiating between if I like this book and not her lifestyle, or if I just don't like this book. Either way, Coco was her own person; very interesting. "

" Kind of disappointed. It focuses on her external life, especially her friends. "

" I've always wanted to know more about Coco Chanel because she's always seemed very interesting, as well as influential. Lisa Chaney does a great job of relating the ups and downs of Chanel's life, although I'm sure this was a tough task. Chanel's early life is shrouded in mystery, but Chaney still helps the reader see the effects of a difficult childhood. Of course the book is filled with tales about life in Paris in the first 6 decades of the twentieth century. There is plenty of mystery in this book, but for readers interested in history, fashion, or both, it's a good read. "
