The author of numerous picture books for children, Denise Fleming creates beloved characters with lasting appeal. In this canine romp, fun-loving red dog Buster is sent away to Cowboy Camp for the weekend. But Buster doesn't want to go because he's afraid of sleeping away from home. Soon enough, though, Buster is going on the tenderfoot tour of the camp and getting to know the other dogs. If he can just start to have a little fun, he'll be sleeping and drooling in the bunkhouse in no time.

"Good story about a dog named Buster who experiences anxiety being away from his home to stay at Cowboy Camp. The story brought about good dialogue and discussion during storytime with preschool and toddler aged kids. The kids also enjoyed the illustrations and especially the map of the camp site."

" I love all the colors Denise Fleming uses in her books. I like this book because Buster is nervous to go to camp, but then realizes how much fun Cowboy Camp is. I think it would be neat if students came up with their own camp for Buster to go to and made a map of the camp. "
— Michelle, 10/30/2012" Buster misses his owner and his cat buddy at first, but gradually discovers he likes camp. Drawings are a perfect rough-hewn Western style and colors. A good book for kids reluctant about going to camp or kids who like fun dog stories. "
— Beth, 8/1/2012" Kind of cute book about staying away from home for the first time. "
— Christi, 7/30/2012" A fun, quick read about a doggie that doesn't want to go to the kennel until he finds out that it's not your typical 'pet hotel'! "
— Jason, 5/5/2012" Great story about homesickness--even if the main character is a dog! "
— Sharon, 3/18/2012" Adorable! Perfectly told from Buster's point of view, a reassuring yet non-treacly tale about how a sleepover away from home can be fun. Fleming's artwork has a cheerful quality about it that makes this book one for the "read it again" shelf. "
— Rebecca, 2/9/2012" I think kids would enjoy this book and make connections with how he was feeling and how they have felt when they have to stay somewhere that is not home. The colors in this book are also very warm and engaging. "
— Felicia, 8/12/2011" Worked better as a book in lap read, than a read-aloud to a group. "
— Kari, 3/5/2011" Why did I not have any of our rodeo reads posted here? A must! "
— Angie, 1/5/2011" Buster has to go to Cowboy Camp a.k.a. Sagebrush Kennels while his owner Brown Shoes is away. At first he is really not happy but over time he starts to have fun. "
— Amy, 8/28/2010" Eh. This showed up on a Mock Caldecott list so I thought I'd check it out (literally and figuratively). It was cute but nothing outstanding. "
— Suzanne, 6/28/2010" Good for new students. Overcoming fears of new places. "

— Sharon, 6/14/2008" Denise Fleming is near the top of my "people so good they'll never win the Caldecott" list of author/artists. But that said, I am under impressed with this one. <br/>Sure the doggies in the cowboy hats are cute. But what's the point? "
