Publisher Description

Henry Bright has newly returned to West Virginia from the battlefields of the First World War. Grief-stricken by the death of his young wife and unsure of how to care for the infant son she left behind, Bright is soon confronted by the destruction of the only home he's ever known. His hopes for safety rest with the angel who has followed him to Appalachia from the trenches of France and who now promises to protect him and his son. Haunted by the abiding nightmare of his experiences in the war and shadowed by his dead wife's father, the Colonel, and his two brutal sons, Bright-along with his newborn-makes his way through a ravaged landscape toward an uncertain salvation.

"I'm a big fan of Ritter's music, especially his songwriting, so when I saw he wrote a book I wanted to check it out. This is a simple story, enhanced by his impressive story telling skills commonly on display in the lyrics of his songs. There's something about his use of the English language that I really like. It's a quick, enjoyable read."

" Not sure what to think after reading this book. After finishing it this morning, I just put the book down. the ending was disappointing and the story itself was strange yet intriguing. I'm not sure if I care for this style of writing ( present day then past then speaking to an angel). It was confusing at times and I feel unsatisfied with the story and the ending itself. I'm not sure what to write cause I am still puzzled by this experience. "

" This novella reads like a fable. Lyrical, lovely style and I just fell for it. I;m moderately familiar with Ritter's musical career, but that had no bearing on my choosing the book. Keep in mind: fable, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. I loved it. "

" I didn't really like this book at all. It had nothing to do with the story and the way the main character Henry Bright has lucid moments where he is talking to his dead wife Rachel and her father Colonel. It was just the way that it was written. It was too slow for me. "

" This book was amazing to put it simply. The details and description Josh gives are amazing. There are times where it feels like a first novel, but for a first novel it is freaking amazing. "

" Poetic and haunting. I loved this book. I will definitely be re-reading it sometime in the future. It reminds me very much of "Cold Mountain," with its epic but intimate scope, and has all the stately trappings of a Greek myth or a tale from the Bible. Unforgettable. "

" A beautiful compelling debut novel. Concise and incisive writing makes this thought provoking story a pleasure to read and doesn't over dramatise dramatic events. Really enjoyed this first fiction read in a long time. "
