He moves from one scrape to the next, all while trying to escape a life of periodic alcoholism, dead-end relationships, writer’s block, and hours of Internet backgammon.
Bored to Death was originally published in McSweeney’s, issue twenty-four, and is now the centerpiece of Ames’ collection, The Double Life Is Twice as Good.

Jonathan Ames is a screenwriter and author of three works of nonfiction, five novels, and a collection of short stories. He is a former columnist for New York Press. He is the author You Were Never Really Here, basis for the multiaward-winning 2017 film starring Joaquin Phoenix. He is also the creator of two television shows, the HBO series Bored to Death and the STARZ series Blunt Talk.
