Plot Summary

Anna Sewell's Black Beauty is a timeless classic, and it has captivated millions of children (and adults) since its release in 1877.

Black Beauty tells the story of a horse from his point of view. You'll learn all about his life in the early years, when he spent time living with his mother on an English farm. A young and spirited colt, Black Beauty grew to reflect his name. As he grew, he pulled taxi cabs in the city of London before retiring to the countryside many years later. During his time as a work horse in London, Black Beauty meets many people and undergoes many trials as the victim of cruel treatment from people. He also finds many blessings along the way and catches a glimpse of the goodness that lies in almost everyone.

Black Beauty is a beautiful tale that's filled with lessons of how to treat others as you wish to be treated. The author demonstrates her vast knowledge of horses, and communicates her message of the proper treatment of animals with perfection. However, Black Beauty also sends an important message regarding love, kindness and respect for people as well. Each chapter is filled with an important life lesson, and each lesson is still important and applicable today.

Anna wrote Black Beauty during the final few years of her life and it was the only novel she ever wrote. At the time she was confined to her home as an invalid and she passed away only five months after it was published. The book was quite popular, and quickly became a bestseller. Anna claimed that the book was not written as a children's book - t was intended to simply promote the proper treatment of horses. Even so, both children and adults of all ages have enjoyed Black Beauty, and it will remain a classic for generations to come.

"'Black Beauty' is my newest all-time favorite book. A timeless classic, this is Anna Sewell's only book and was first published in 1877. The book exposed the ill-treatment of horses at the hands of their owners' and led to a change in people's attitudes towards horses and domestic animals in general. If you, like me, love horses, you'll love this book. The book is endearing and it's simply written and I dearly wish Anna Sewell had written a few more."

Publisher Summary

Every child loves a story about a horse, and Black Beauty remains one of the finest, most touching ever written. Set in Victorian London, the novel follows the shifting fortunes of a horse as he moves from owner to owner. Narrated by the noble Black Beauty himself, the tale offers an animal's perspective of the world and highlights the thoughtless, even cruel treatment animals endured during that period.

" I'm probably the wrong person to review a book about horses, since I have what some call an unnatural fear of them. I didn't HATE the story. I think it would be really interesting to a kid who has a great affinity for horses, but be forewarned, that it does go into some detail about the abuses that were put upon horses back then. Overall, it's an okay read, but then again, me+horses=bad. "

" I read this aloud to William at bed time. I remembered a couple details from when my father read the Great Illustrated Classics edition to us kids. (BB getting sick from lack of a blanket, seeing Ginger again years later). I was curious how the plot wouls be with a horse narrator and such a realistic tone. Turns out that the stories are all based on morals, much like the other beloved classic Little Women. I don't really like that style of book because the morals are too heavy handed and obvious. I much prefer a book that requires a little thinking and some subtlity. Yet, I was pretty shocked at how the horses were treated. It seemed a little harsh for children, but I guess back when it was written, cruelity to animals was probably witnessed by children much more since they had such reliance on horses. Worth the time, but not a favorite. "

About Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was born in England. A knee injury at fourteen left her disabled, but she rode and drove horses very well. She began learning about horses early in life, spending many hours driving her father to and from the station from which he commuted to work. Her dependence on horse-drawn transportation fostered her respect of horses. She wrote her one book, Black Beauty, in her fifties, and it was published in 1877 just five months before she died. Although it is now considered a children’s classic, she originally wrote it for those who worked with horses. She said “a special aim [was] to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses.” The book has had a tremendous impact in creating a new wave of humane thinking towards animals.
