I think it would be really interesting to a kid who has a great affinity for horses, but be forewarned, that it does go into some detail about the abuses that were put upon horses back then. Overall, it's an okay read, but then again, me+horses=bad. "

" I read this aloud to William at bed time. I remembered a couple details from when my father read the Great Illustrated Classics edition to us kids. (BB getting sick from lack of a blanket, seeing Ginger again years later). I was curious how the plot wouls be with a horse narrator and such a realistic tone. Turns out that the stories are all based on morals, much like the other beloved classic Little Women. I don't really like that style of book because the morals are too heavy handed and obvious. I much prefer a book that requires a little thinking and some subtlity. Yet, I was pretty shocked at how the horses were treated. It seemed a little harsh for children, but I guess back when it was written, cruelity to animals was probably witnessed by children much more since they had such reliance on horses. Worth the time, but not a favorite. "
