Success catapulted Alex James from a slug-infested squat in Camberwell to a world of private jets and world-class restaurants. As the second drunkest member of the world's drunkest band life was always chaotic, but Alex James retained a boundless enthusiasm and curiosity at odds with his hedonistic lifestyle.

In Bit of a Blur he recounts his experiences living through the madness of Britpop, detailing both the pleasures and perils of fame. From nights in the Groucho with Damien Hirst, to dancing to Sister Sledge with Bjork, to being bitten on the nose by the lead singer of Iron Maiden, he offers a fascinating and hilarious insight into the world of celebrity.

Alex James is the perfect chronicler of his generation: witty, observant, frank, and brimming with joie de vivre. Bit of a Blur is as charming, funny, and deliciously disreputable as its author. Download and start listening now!

" uh, i didn't exactly read this, I listened to the audio book, which was a million times better I'm sure because Alex James himself reads it. If you like Blur at all, this is the best book ever. "

" I fluctuated between living Alex to wanting to give him a good shake! Alex James seems to have tripped through life trampling on everything and hurting those he cared for but still comes out shining and successful! Despite this his biography is an enjoyable read and when he decided to sort his life out he becomes a lot more likeable! "

" 3 bottles of champagne a day, a serious cheese addiction, and a very humble and interesting look at one of the greatest unsung bands of our times. "

" I liked this book 'cause it brought me good memories back, but as literature, it is very weak. "

" Ok, as a big Blur fan I can't be desinterested here. I've been waiting for this kind of book for some time. I just wonder why the hell it took me so long to put my hands on this? I guess I just needed time to "ripen" to fully enjoy it. But on the other hand if I had read this book in high school I might have been a rock star by now. Not that I would like to be on cocaine and drinking tons of champagne but Alex's life story proves that you need some real balls and a lot of self-confidence to get what you want. The spontaneity, the enthusiasm, the optimism. That's what I lacked and, frankly, am still lacking. It's weird but this book has somehow opened my eyes and now I feel like I want to change some things when it comes to my life and how to live it. "Bit of a Blur" definitely should not be missing in your bookcase if you are a musician or an artist in general ... or a man who wants to know how it is to become successful in showbusiness and how it works there. "

" I loved this book. Alex James is such an engaging writer, is at all times brutally honest and isn't afraid of coming across like a twat. This book made me laugh out loud and I wished it went for longer. "

" Interesting to hear about his life and how Blur started. I thought it could have been more detailed though. "

" James's prose can be a bit flowery at times, but if you've read any of his columns then you'll be used to that. Not quite the warts and all account I might have hoped for, but James's wandering and enquiring mind makes it engaging enough. "

" It takes a long time to say: I got famous, did a lot of drinking and coke and had sex with a lot of chicks, I learned to fly a plane and then I got married to a hot chick who had some kids. I would recommend reading this on a plane. "

" Alex James, the gourgeous bass player from the Blur tells a lot about him...how he started playing the bass because buying a keyboard was too expensive, how is being a POP star in London in the 90's...how music is the best thing that can ever happen to you ;) "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Isabel | 5/22/2013

" I wanted to know more about Blur so I thought I'd give this book a try. I was pleased because Alex James wrote about his bandmates and his friends and all the crazy stuff he got into. It was very endearing. I'm glad I got to know more about Blur and each band member through the eyes of Alex. "

" I for one enjoyed the book hugely. I am a blur fan, a bit disappointed that he dismissed the Mile End gig but there we go.

The guy lived the rock and roll lifestyle and I was envious :)

If you like blur, name dropping celebs and the journey of a young man give it a read "

" Ultimately unsatisfying due to a lack of details...the whole Britpop thing is skated over in a page or two. The making of Blurs records is also given short shrift. Next time, more is better! "

" A pretty amusing read. Exposes the fickleness of your average super model and the laziness of your average bass player. Gets a bit samish from half way through. Same message on alcohol abuse as Fat, Forty and Fired, like, don't drink, its bad for you. "
