It was the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business had many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom was diminishing... and many were desperate to take that freedom back.

Among them was a great dreamer, an immigrant who'd pulled himself from the depths of poverty to become one of the wealthiest and most admired men in the world. That man was Andrew Ryan, and he believed that great men and women deserved better. So he set out to create the impossible: a utopia free from government, from censorship, and from moral restrictions on science, where what you gave was what you got. He created Rapture - the shining city below the sea. But this utopia suffered a great tragedy. This is the story of how it all came to be... and how it all ended.

" I felt like a total nerd for reading this, but not enough to stop reading it. It definitely made me want to play the first Bioshock again (which picks up right where this book ends). Definitely recommended for any fans of that game. "

" Not as awful as people said. Extremely slow start. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Rhonda | 2/7/2014

" This was a great prequel to the games! I was caught up from the first page reading about how Rapture came about and then the disintegration of the society Ryan built there. Definitely recommend it to any fan of the game and if you like strange sort of sci fi types of books, give it a shot! "

" I liked the idea behind the story more than the actual story. Getting an idea about how Rapture was created was always the biggest draw I had to the games. Unfortunately, this was too slow to get going and then had a very abrupt end. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who isn't interested in just seeing a starting point for the games. Nor would I recommend it to a fan of the series. "

" I will agree with the reviews that this book is slow to get started, at first I thought I just didn't like the author. The book did pick up however, and Bill (who is the main character in my view) was very likable. This presents a very interesting look at what led to the events of the game and as expected I couldn't help but cry a little near the end. "

" Better than it sounds. Strictly for fans of the game, probably, though. "

" The best video game based book I have ever read. If like me you're a huge fan of both Bioshock games then this is a must-read. Well-written, thought-provoking, and it adds a whole other dimension to the narrative of the games. Bioshock: Rapture is superb. "
