Guy de Maupassant is revered for his naturalistic fiction, which brilliantly captures flesh-and-blood characters as it evokes the most telling details of everyday life. Considered one of the finest French novels ever written, Bel Ami follows journalist Georges Duroy and his increasing stature among the Paris elite. With an immense thirst for power, Georges is not above an almost gleeful use of wealthy mistresses to achieve his ends.

"Really captivating novel. It grabbed me from the start. George is a man without morals - that's for sure. One suggestion - the novel was translated literally from French. The wording should be adjusted to keep the sense of the time period, but fix phrases that aren't/weren't used in English. "

" If you ever build a time machine and decide to go to 19th century France and become a money-grubbing douchebag, this is your guide!! "
— Elizabeth, 6/16/2011" Why haven't I read any novels of de Maupassant? This was great...as good as his famous short stories. "
— Susan, 6/13/2011" I tried to read this one in French and I'm a little unskilled for that. Regardless, I followed the plot fairly well. The problem was, I just wasn't that into it; I gave up about 1 third of the way through. "
— Jason, 6/1/2011" I read this as research for my novel My Phantom: The Memoir of Christine Daaé. I needed to get a feel for the time and place -- 1880 Paris -- and the fiction of Guy de Maupassant was a wonderful way to start. "
— Elizabeth, 5/5/2011" Classics May, 2010. Very French story from the author of the short story "The Diamond Necklace." "
— Lily, 4/11/2011" Started reading the project gutenberg version, and realised (after reading far too much) that the translation leaves a whole lot to be desired. Will now start with this version, which seems much more promising.

"
— Lotta, 4/6/2011" Another book that gives me that love/hate relationship. "
— Ashleigh, 3/25/2011" I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It seemed to start in a basic, elementary language, but as the plot became more intense, the writing became more complex. The story drew me in, even as I found George to be a despicable character. "
— Jeffrey, 3/18/2011" very slow start...but was interesting how it all ended up. "
— Patti, 3/18/2011" It was a little difficult to read being that it was based in the 1800s and it based in France. All in all was a good read and will definitely read it again. "
— Rosella, 3/7/2011" George Duroy... El villano mas bueno.
Es primera vez q ganan los malos, sin duda... perturbador "
— konneko, 2/28/2011" it feels remarkably contemporary. A quick, easy read about a real jerk! "
— Ilya, 2/27/2011Guy de Maupassant (1850–1893) was a popular nineteenth-century French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form’s finest exponents. A protégé of Flaubert, his stories are characterized by their economy of style and efficient, effortless dénouement. Many of the stories are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s, and several describe the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught in the conflict, emerge changed. He authored some three hundred short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse.
