Publisher Description

Does the middle child in a family always get a raw deal?

Certainly life is not straightforward for Fiona O'Connell. With her older brother out at work, she is often left in charge at home, dealing with the terror of her little twin sisters, Mona and Rona, and their line-dancing routines. She finds her escape in her books, her art and her blossoming friendship with Jaz, the Sikh boy at school.

Then, one day her mother goes into hospital to have her fifth child. And she never comes home. Her death in childbirth feels like something that happened in Victorian times - surely not in Glasgow in the 21st century. For Fiona, life will never be the same again.

"Once I had got over the Glaswegian dialect and the sylistic way of writing without speech marks, I loved this book. A wonderful exploration of teenage/student angst and dealing with death, bereavement, love and loss. Fantastic characterisation."

" I loved the wonderfully drawn characters in this coming of age novel. That feeling of being on the cusp of adulthood is captured vividly.....I couldn't put this book down and read it in a couple of days. Highly recommended. "

" I found the Glaswegian speak a big distraction which took several chapters to get used to. Other than that I liked it. It is the story of how a tragedy reshapes a family, and in particular a young girl. Yet another 'coming of age' story, but an absorbing read all the same. "

" Moving, and hilarious in equal measure. The story of Fiona, her love of Emily Bronte, and the relationship with her family. "

" Quite good with lovely characters but find the writing in Glaswegian dialect frustrating. "

" I'd give this ten stars if it was possible. Perfect. I rationed my reading so it would last longer. Haven't done that since I read 'Broken For You' "

" Not without fault, but compelling enough to finish in two days. Her glaswegian spelling is still as charming as in Buddha Da. "

" Excellent book about a girl in Scotland studying art and trying to keep her family together after her mother's death. Really well written, and I liked the way the Scittish accent and words were used - easier to follow than Trainspotting! "

" I love how the author writes in dialect. This does not get in the way of reading as I found in some books, like Rob Roy which was unintelligible. This is lighter than Buddha Da which I loved. "
