"What a fun book! Beautifully -- and darkly -- illustrated. The moon is full and the bats gather up the family to go to the beach. They toast bug-mallows, fly each other as kites, sail in fry boxes they find in the garbage, and generally have a great time. I loved the book and Lenore indulged me with it."
— Loren (5 out of 5 stars)
“This is the quintessential book about going to the beach complete with overflowing picnic baskets, kite flying, singing around the campfire, and scratchy sand in places where no sand should be. Kids will certainly identify with the exuberant and familiar fun, but what will get them howling is the fact that the characters are bats that are visiting the beach in the moonlight. The rhyming text is grounded in reality with many inventive twists to keep the imagination rolling.”
— School Library Journal" This is a well written, and beautifully-illustrated book. It is a smart, charming book for kids of all ages. "
— Betty, 2/16/2014" I don't know why, but I've always loved bats! I think they are so cute...which is probably why I liked this book. on a crisp clear evening, bats come from across the town to have a beach outing, they do all the regular beach things...surf, sail, fly kites, have snacks...but with a bit of a twist. I think the image of 'bug-mallows' is going to stay with me for a while! "
— Molly, 2/14/2014" Such a fun book to read with the play on words and the rhyming. Great illustrations too. "
— Andrea, 2/6/2014" This picture book tells the story about what bats might do with their spare time -- go to the beach! Its vivid picture and rhyming text engages readers and pulls them into the story. "
— Rachel, 2/4/2014" This is a beautifully illustrated book on what "could" happen when the bats have a night out on the beach. Older students (4-5th grade) like it much more than the younger ones (K-3). Although it does rhyme, it doesn't "flow" as well as I had hoped. "
— Margie, 2/4/2014" Read-aloud for kids with a nice cadence. Excellent drawings. But scientifically just sooo wrong. And silly. "
— Amanda, 1/31/2014" one of my top ten "
— Barb, 1/26/2014" 24 months "
— Sofia, 1/19/2014" Another whimsical rhyming bat adventure. "
— Paula, 1/18/2014" This was my first Brian Lies book, and led me to the Bats at the Library as well. Both are great for the same reasons: poetry for children, beautiful art, and good humor. Note the author's head shot, upside down like a bat. I love it. "
— Daniel, 1/1/2014" Just fantastic - great rhymes and great illustrations. My sons love it. "
— Juanita, 12/25/2013" I sent this book to my two year old niece. It's the perfect story to read to kids. The rhyme is excellent and the pictures are wonderful. The story lends itself to asking questions and engaging your young reader! "
— Paula, 12/15/2013" Same author as Bats at the library. I love the pictues especially the gross bug-mallows that get roasted on the beach. "
— Inspired, 11/16/2013" This is a fun book about all of the things that bats do when they're at the beach at night while all of the humans are sleeping. This would be a great engaging book to begin a lesson on nocturnal animals. "
— Christine, 11/12/2013" The cutest book ever! It makes me squee every time I read it to my preschool class. The illustrations are so busy and fun, you can find something new every time you look at it. "
— Hannah, 11/8/2013" These are the best books! I LOVE Brian Lies! "

— Lafcadio, 5/5/2013" A poem book that shows us all the interesting things that you can do at the beach. In this book we see what the bats do why they are at the beach. A easy read for student learning to read, it is also a good read aloud book. Great for k-3rd grade. "
— Angela, 3/8/2013" The blend of verse, humor, facts, and fantasy combine in a story with heart and style. Don't miss this series. "
