Publisher Description

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Green Gables had no intention of adopting the talkative, mischievous, red-headed girl the orphanage in Nova Scotia sent by mistake. What they wanted was a sturdy, sensible boy to help with the chores. Instead, they got 11-year-old Anne Shirley, whose capacity for adventure was only matched by her bright spirit and love of life. Still, there was something about the little girl that gave them second thoughts. She was keen of wit with a scintillating effervescence that was purely captivating. Just perhaps....

"I love Anne of Green Gables. The movies are fantastic, but the books are even better. Her (mis)adventures keep me entertained. They may not move fast enough for some people, but I feel that they unfold more about the characters which is nice. I actually haven't read clear to the end of the series. I did actually get a little tired with them when it started getting into stories just about Anne and Gilbert's children, but I thoroughly enjoyed them up to that point."

" The first book in the Anne of Green Gables series is great. It is well written, amusing, and has great descriptions. I read these books as a child and loved them. I recently began re-reading them, and still loved the first book in the series (which surprised me because I had thought of it as a "youth" book), but realized that the books kind of go downhill from after the first one, hence the four star rating. " I read all of these books as an adult, and enjoyed them. I saw the miniseries on PBS first so I had an idea of the story, but the books are better (as usual). I enjoy literature with a female heroine from the 1800's or other interesting historical periods, so this was appropriate. Since it is targeted for teens there aren't adult themes but it isn't a kiddie book either. "

" These probably don't technically deserve five stars based on literary merit, because the plots are rather see-through and the writing isn't flawless, but I have awarded them anyways because I love them so much) "
