Publisher Description

Judi Bowker and Anna Massey star in this gripping BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation featuring young detective Cordelia Gray. Mark Calendar, 21 years old and in his final year at Cambridge, leaves university without warning and takes a job as a gardener. Eighteen days later he is found hanging in the cottage where he lived. The verdict at the inquest is suicide. Cordelia Gray, now sole proprietor of the Pryde Detective Agency, is hired by Mark's father, the eminent scientist Sir Ronald, to piece together the facts surrounding his death. Gradually she sheds light on the apparent suicide, and long-suppressed family secrets begin to emerge. Whilst further tragedy is in store for the family, Cordelia discovers that, in the midst of Mark's many friends, there is a dangerous enemy with the cold and complex mind of a killer.

"I read this many years ago and just loved Cordelia. A friend of my sister's back in junior high was named Cordelia and I couldn't help but imagine this woman as the Cordelia I knew! Part of the fun of this is the "unsuitability" of Cordelia's job in the eyes of the world, which I related to and cherished. She did it her way. P.D. James is a wonderful writer and I may have to go back and get this one again."

" At first it was interesting to follow the main character, Cordelia, as she found clues and investigated the case of the apparent suicide of a well-known scientist's son. However,as the plot progresses, it became slightly predictable. The middle of the story was not the most interesting of them all, but there were several twists at the end that tied some of the knots well. The conclusion could have been slightly longer though. All in all, it was a good book. "

" Cordelia Gray is a very different kind of protagonist from P.D. James' Adam Dalgliesh, and after having read a lot of Dalgliesh mysteries, I was surprised by the way this mystery played out. Much less structured, much more emotional, a lot about the interplay between the characters, just a very different approach. Still enjoyed it very much--P.D. James writes beautifully. "

" I'm a sucker for a decent detective story and this surely did not disappoint. I found the writing eloquent and captivating. I loved the character of Cordelia Gray. Clever and strong as any female detective must be when so many people are telling you such a job is unsuitable. "

" The first of James' two Cordelia Gray mysteries. Personally, I prefer the lady sleuth to the poet Dalgleish. Such a shame that she appears so infrequently in James' detective series. "

" Saw more Dorothy L. Sayers in this than in any of the previous James books. Was looking for a mystery and saw this had Cambridge as a setting. My daughter leaves for there this week. Wanted to give her something fun to read for the journey. She's going on a course and has lots of mandatory reading. "
