Ildrecca is a dangerous city, if you don't know what you're doing. It takes a canny hand and a wary eye to run these streets and survive. Fortunately, Drothe has both. He has been a member of the Kin for years, rubbing elbows with thieves and murderers from the dirtiest of alleys to the finest of neighborhoods. Working for a crime lord, he finds and takes care of trouble inside his boss's organization—while smuggling relics on the side.
But when his boss orders Drothe to track down whoever is leaning on his organization's people, he stumbles upon a much bigger mystery. There's a book, a relic any number of deadly people seem to be looking for—a book that just might bring down emperors and shatter the criminal underworld.
A book now inconveniently in Drothe's hands...

"A really enjoyable debut book, Hulick has nicely balanced the world building necessary for a new fantasy-adventure with getting the plot going to keep the reader interested. An anti-hero protagonist can sometimes be difficult for readers to accept, but again Hulick manages that as well by creating a character that draws you into his way of thinking even as Drothe balances the slippery slope of dealing with all the underworld characters he lives and works among. This book takes the various shades of grey that the characters deal with and makes you invest in the outcome of Drothe's story. I look forward to reading the sequel."

“Kirby Heyborne seems to have taken his inspiration from 1930s gangster movies. His thieves speak with steely resolve, and his crime lords may have some Edward G. Robinson in their DNA. His performance improves upon an already good book a caper about a smart thief is read by a true professional. Listeners will root for this thief—as long as he’s portrayed by Heyborne.”

— Library Journal" Despite a fair number of grammatical errors and a few spelling mistakes, this just has to be rated 5 stars. I didn't expect it to be this good to be honest, but I loved the story and the characters. And now I'm seeing that this is a series?! Great! "

— Keith, 12/26/2013" c2011. It took me sometime to realise that I was thoroughly enjoying this book. Great protagonist in Drothe and, oh boy, Bronze Dregan, woohoo. Lots more to come of this, I hope. Will be looking to the next one with a great deal of anticipation. Different slightly to the normal sword and magic. Don't like Shadow much but Solitude has promise. "
