America the Beautiful is about the path the United States has taken, for better or worse, since its founding. It discusses the goals of the founding fathers, the ideals that the country was built on and where we stand today. It also tells the story of author Dr. Ben Carson and his journey from poverty to being a renowned pediatric surgeon and humanitarian.

In the book, Dr. Carson talks about his take on the educational system, capitalism, socialism, morals and even healthcare. He considers himself independent of any political party, but believes the country has strayed from the original ideals of the country. He talks of how the country has declined, but also describes how its citizens can revive it.

Carson mixes his personal history in with the country's history, also telling an inspiring story. He was raised by a single mother in inner-city Detroit. She pushed him to excel in school, and taught him to have a strong sense of character. W hen he failed to perform as she expected in school, she assigned her own reading, book reports and homework. By the time he was 18, Carson was an honor student at Southwestern High School. He attended Yale University, then medical school.

Carson experienced discrimination and racism throughout his childhood and into young adulthood. He was hurt by the people who discriminated against him. The pain and anger, however, just drove him to work harder and achieve more. He developed his own sense of self worth, and used it to fuel his dreams.

Today Dr. Carson is a respected neurosurgeon. He serves as the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Carson met his wife and co-author Candy at Yale in 1971. They married four years later and have three sons. Candy is a musician and also holds an M.B.A. degree from Yale.

How to improve our lives, our communities, our nation, our world.

What is America becoming? Or, more importantly, what can she be if we reclaim a vision for the things that made her great in the first place?

In America the Beautiful, Dr. Ben Carson helps us learn from our past in order to chart a better course for our future.

From his personal ascent from inner-city poverty to international medical and humanitarian acclaim, Carson shares experiential insights that help us understand

… what is good about America
… where we have gone astray
… which fundamental beliefs have guided America from her founding into preeminence among nations.

Written by a man who has experienced America’s best and worst firsthand, America the Beautiful is at once alarming, convicting, and inspiring. You’ll gain new perspectives on our nation’s origins, our Judeo-Christian heritage, our educational system, capitalism versus socialism, our moral fabric, healthcare, and much more.

An incisive manifesto of the values that shaped America’s past and must shape her future, America the Beautiful calls us all to use our God-given talents to improve our lives, our communities, our nation, and our world.
