Whether you’re trans, gay, lesbian, bi, queer, questioning, or straight, this winner of the Stonewall Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award will make you marvel at the beauty of human connection and the irrepressible nature of love.
Everyone has that one line they swear they’ll never cross, the one thing they say they’ll never do. We draw the line. Maybe we even believe it.
Sage Hendricks was my line.
Logan Witherspoon befriends Sage Hendricks at a time when he no longer trusts or believes in people. As time goes on, he finds himself drawn to Sage, pulled in by her deep, but sexy feminine voice and her constant smile. Eventually Logan’s feelings for Sage grow so strong that he can’t resist kissing her. Moments later, he wishes he never had. Sage finally discloses her big secret: she was born a boy. Enraged, frightened, and feeling betrayed, Logan lashes out at Sage. Once his anger has cooled, however, his regrets lead him to attempt to rekindle their friendship. But it’s hard to replace something that’s been broken—and it’s even harder to find your way back to friendship when you began with love.

"Very tricky in the beginning. Can't really say much without giving anything away. It's such a lovely book and it has you rooting for both characters, even with the surprise. I hated the ending however because it felt like a cliff hanger; leaves you not knowing whether the two characters end up together for good or not. Plenty of plot twists also. Excellent read :)"

— Booklist“Katcher flawlessly channels the worried and confused voice of a straight teenage boy in this honest and uncompromising take on transgender love…Tackles issues of homophobia, hate crimes, and stereotyping with humor and grace in an accessible tone that will resonate with teens.”
— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)" It just kept going on and on.... "
— Kelly, 2/13/2014" Teen reading challenge. I was annoyed by the narrator just because he's such a self-absorbed boy, but that's not a real negative. I'm so glad to see something for teens that's well-written and reasonable about a transgender teen. I preferred this to Luna, though they're sort of covering different ground. "
— Thorn, 2/11/2014" Quite an interesting topic. Much more from Logan's point of view (the friend of Sage, who is transgendered). At several points I had to remind myself that he is a teenaged boy and not to get too angry at his cruelty. What a shock it would be to find out that the girl you've been after is really a boy! "
— Cass, 1/6/2014" I read this a while ago. I have no idea why I forgot to shelve it. "
— Cory, 1/6/2014" Author does an amazing job of presenting multiple viewpoints...very realistic and sometimes difficult to read. "
— Mary, 12/27/2013" It was shocking to find out that she was a HE! it really shocked me but it made a point! We still shouldn't judge someone by how they act or what they look like or want to be. "
— Kameron, 12/27/2013" I really loved this book. I think it opens up insight in to a world people rarely talk about. How painful must teenage life be for a transgender child and the people that love them. "
— Erica, 12/6/2013" Loved it! Great story, and great introduction to the societal difficulties transgendered people face. It was also lots of fun to see references to places in my town, since the book takes place partly in Columbia. "
— Tricia, 7/19/2013" Along with Luna, this was another extremely important book for me. "
— Connie, 1/19/2013" It was a beautiful story. Thought-provoking and eye-opener novel. "
— Mikko, 12/7/2012" I had to read this book for a class at UW Madison. I read it in 3 days. I couldn't put it down and somehow thought I was watching a movie in my mind. I laughed I cried. I cried a lot. So glad this was an assignment. "
— Amanda, 8/21/2012" Before you even consider reading this... read all of the summary in the cover. I wouldn't have wasted my time reading half of it. Good, but too seriously dramatic. "
— Nicole, 2/3/2012" Author does an amazing job of presenting multiple viewpoints...very realistic and sometimes difficult to read. "
— Mary, 10/24/2011" Amazing! Great story, but it also brings home some of the tough points of alternative lifestyles. Touching, funny, and tough!!! Definetly worth the read! "
— Maeghan, 10/11/2011" I loved Katcher's first book and this one was just as amazing. Katcher brings such a realistic voice to each of his characters. Just as life isn't always perfect, his stories do not always wrap up in a pretty little package, adding credibility to Katcher's storytelling. "
— Jen, 10/8/2011" THIS IS A REALLY GREAT BOOK IT HAS REALLY STRONG FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS!! I WOULD REALLY RECOMEND THIS INCREDIBLE BOOK!! ;D "
— Evelyn, 10/5/2011" I thought of the book that it was good and sad the way that Sage left and did not get back with Sage becuase she left and Logan was starting his life with another girl. "
— Yh, 9/30/2011" This book is AMAZING this shows the real life expirience of an 18 year old boy and how he solves his problems with a mysterious girl who you call...Sage. "
— Nayeli, 9/23/2011" I downloaded this book from the Mesquite ISD digital library. <br/>This book was very intriquing and hard to put down. There is an unexpected and non predictable twist within the story. "
— Amy, 9/22/2011" Painful, beautiful, sad and I wanted a sequel, but this is a book that would probably be lessened by one. Great insight into what it's like to be transgendered. "
