Weakness has always been a concern for William Miller. Growing up vegetarian in a family of bodybuilders will do that to a person. But William is further weakened by the death of his mother, the arrival of a new stepmother, and his irrepressible crush on his new stepsister, Lulu. As Lulu faces down her own challenges, William watches his life shift into tumult and despair. Once Lulu departs for college, Will goes into the world to find himself— discovering Western philosophy, a cruel dating world, enduring friendship, and, ultimately, his true calling. Emboldened by his turn as a late-night radio personality, Will rescues himself from the self-image of weakness he'd long wished to escape. This debut novel explores the fundamental difference between where we come from—and the endless possibilities of where we may go.

"This is an enjoyable read. The writing is vivid, witty and bittersweet. The author nails every stage of growing up. My only let down was that the ending was heavily foreshadowed, so i expected the resolution to come sooner. Although the second half contained some great scenes, I think the main story line went on a bit too long and it started reminding me of Murakami's Norwegian Wood. In some ways that hurt the delightfulness of the vignettes in the second half because they seem out of context."

" What's the big effing secret?! Just TELL people! "
— Marfita, 2/5/2014" It was funny, sad, smart and entertaining. I loved the way it was written. I will recommend it for book club. "
— Connie, 1/30/2014" surprise and sad and some nice visions (and some icky ones, too) "
— Jackson, 1/20/2014" This book was TERRIBLE!!!! Think boy loves girl, girl rejects boy, boy refuses to accept rejection, girl self-hates because she has to reject boy, and no one just gets over it! The main character is a rude and angsty boy, while his female love interest punishes herself physically and mentally for being 'the cause' of his mal-adjusted behavior. The characters were pathetic and did I mention the book was terrible?!??! "
— Krysta, 1/18/2014" Well written. Story was interesting and rolled along at a good pace but took a very VC Andrews twist somewhere there in the last 1/4 of the book. "
— Kelli, 1/15/2014" Meh. Mediocre coming-of-age novel - man, those Powell's review a days are not working out for me lately. "
— Jennifer, 1/15/2014" I read this book a couple years back and occasionally have things remind me of bits and pieces of the story. I've been trying to piece enough of the story together in my head to remember the title, and now that I've found it, I think I need to read it again. It was kinda fucking awesome, even if it was a total bummer. "
— Spike, 1/15/2014" I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this book somewhat but the only reason I stayed mildly interested and kept reading was because i had a bunch of flights to sit through and needed some entertainment. This book had a lot of potential, I was looking for some gut wrenching, heart breaking, obsessive love story. But instead what I got was an obsessive boy who barely does anything about his feelings and just lets life go on without really living. There was some humor in the book and it was at those parts that I was enjoying it. I give it 3 stars for mild entertainment mixed with a few laughs. I don't think I'll read anything else he writes. "
— Jessica, 1/14/2014" Just read an article about Evison in the Seattle Times. He's from Bainbridge Island and spent about 20 years in dead-end jobs before he wrote this book which is going to be a movie. "Let that be a lesson for the kids," he said. In other words never give up! "
— Joy, 1/10/2014" Finished one last book for 2012. "
— Amanda, 11/8/2013" Different--really liked the experience. "
— Edna, 11/5/2013" I was thinking this was going to be funny, and it was ... yet also intense and a bit distressing. I enjoyed it immensely and found Evison's quirky characters to be very appealing. "
— Sonja, 11/3/2013" Another quirky coming-of-age tale about a boy obsessed with his stepsister, but the protagonist was so charming and candid that it made the story enjoyable. "
— Judy, 10/24/2013" This book made me want to cry, made me laugh out loud and made me finish it as fast as possible. "
— Stacy, 10/7/2013" this book rules so far and might be my favorite book of 2008. "
— Tony, 2/26/2013" I liked the writing better than the story. I figured out the "plot" early on, but enjoyed the characters and descriptions so much it was still well worth finishing. 3.5 stars is probably more appropriate. (I listened to the book and the reader was good). "
— Rita, 5/27/2012" I would have given four or five stars to a better-edited version of this book. It rambled, especially the second half. "
— Audrey, 12/23/2011" I wanted more resolution at the end, but kind of glad I didn't get it! Definitely an enjoyable read "
— Jill, 11/20/2011" A great book by a local author. A sort of coming of age, gen x saga about love and the complexities within. Loved the family dynamics and the internal struggle of several characters. Though not the most uplifting of stories, it's well-written and easy to sink into. Very true to life! "
— Adrienne, 6/9/2011" Quirky, funny, heart-breaking, thoughtful and thought-provoking. "
— Perrel, 4/29/2011" It was funny, sad, smart and entertaining. I loved the way it was written. I will recommend it for book club. "
— Connie, 4/1/2011" This book is OK. I just didn't think the story was worth telling. It was too dark, too dragged on. I did like Evison's writing style, and I would give him another shot. "
— Kammy, 3/22/2011" Another quirky coming-of-age tale about a boy obsessed with his stepsister, but the protagonist was so charming and candid that it made the story enjoyable. "
— Judy, 3/17/2011" OK story, some fun characters, didn't really get the point of it all, to be honest. Not all of the characters' actions ran true. "
— Paul, 2/6/2011" Very good novel about growing up and being compulsively in love. "
— Paulette, 12/18/2010" Loved it throughout, but wished for more at the story's <br/>ending. "
