"I had been married three years when I fell in love," begins Kate, a firecracker of a woman who thought she'd found the yin to her yang in Cary, her sensible and adoring husband. For their friend Luke—a charismatic copywriter who loves women and attention in equal measure, and preferably together—life has been more than sweet beside Cressida, the dutiful pediatric oncologist who stole his heart. But when a whimsical flirtation between Kate and Luke turns into something far more dangerous, the foursome will be irrevocably intertwined by more than just their shared history.
After the Fall follows the origin and fallout of the most passionate of affairs through the eyes of all four characters, unveiling the misunderstandings and unspoken needs that lie beneath our search for love and connection. The narrative moves effortlessly between past and present, painting a nostalgic picture of the two marriages at their most idealistic—the exact moment when like turned to love—and at their most volatile. Thanks to the boundless compassion with which Ladd draws her characters, one can't help but root for them as they wrestle between newfound desire and remembrances of time past, all the while spinning toward an inevitable conclusion.
Steeped in psychological insight and raw emotion, After the Fall is an unsettling novel of the many ways we love and hurt each other.

"Wow, what a book! An affair amongst friends! Things seem to go their way for awhile but as it turns out they were caught!Sometimes you can recover from a "fall" but sometimes you have to make the best out of the solution. Was a good read. first-read winner #6"

— Kirkus" what a fascinating fictional portrayal of betrayal, hurt, deception, pain and the many facets of marriage and adultery! it was sad and yet had moments that made you smile. "
— Shannon, 2/16/2014" I was excited to read this boom based on all of the good reviews, and it was a topic that I hadn't read about in a long time (i.e. extramarital affair). But, to be honest, it didn't live up to my expectations. I think the book did a decent job covering all of the various perspectives of those involved in the affair (i.e. the 2 in the affair, their spouses, and their various friends). It also did a good job covering the emotions (i.e. emotional and physical) of those entering into an affair (i.e. WHY they might enter into an affair, even when they're happy in their marriage). And then the book covers the obvious danger of an affair, and how it can play out over time. But for me, it didn't have the "page turner" aspect that I was hoping for that other reviewers wrote about... "
— Kristin, 2/9/2014" I kinda liked this book. About two happily married couples who are friends and then the wife of one couple falls for the husband of the other. It made me somewhat sympathetic to their dilemna. Also, how the book ended was pretty neat. "
— Cori, 2/3/2014" This is a story of infidelity and its consequences. I love how true the emotions read, but then the book was written by a psychologist, so I'm assuming the characters were a mash-up of real clients. In the beginning, I was afraid it might trigger some very strong emotions in me, but the author kept us a step removed (a clinical distance?) from the passion. It was realistic, though, in that some of the characters didn't have closure by the end of the book. So, to recap: cheating spouses, human reactions, realistic outcomes, but no emotional buy-in from the reader. Good, not great. "
— Marci, 1/21/2014" This was a wonderful book - a page turner. "
— Fleur, 1/20/2014" I hated the ending of this book. It ruined the entire book for me. The book started off slow, but then it became a page turner and I wanted to see how it ended. I was so disappointed. Oh well, you can't like them all. "
— Debbie, 12/19/2013" It was an ok Book. I had a hard time keeping up with the story because each chapter was a different character, I think it was interesting but it didn't work for me in this book. I do think the characters were well developed "
— Mike, 10/5/2013" Three and a half stars. A fascinating glimpse into the addictiveness of a passionate love affair and its terrible consequences. "
— Gab, 8/11/2013" Not very uplifting, but I couldn't put it down. A little disappointed in the ending. "

— Cynfully, 12/4/2012" I thought Kylie Ladd got the emotions, confusion, and mess of an extramatartial affair right on. The pain and happiness the characters felt was very real. "
— Jocelyn, 7/24/2012" This was sent to me per my friend Joanie and Doubleday. Good reading - makes you think of the consequences of having an affair. Everything is wonderful for awhile and then reality sets in, the spouses find out and life is never the same "
— Joanne, 9/26/2011" LOVED this book. A real page-turner.

I loved the short chapters, and the fact it was written from the point of view of all the characters.

A must read in my opinion. "

— Rita, 3/9/2011" I hated the ending of this book. It ruined the entire book for me. The book started off slow, but then it became a page turner and I wanted to see how it ended. I was so disappointed. Oh well, you can't like them all. "
— Debbie, 12/9/2010" Pretty good, but the four first person narratives sounded so much the same. Would have worked better in third person, I think. "
