Publisher Description

Abraham Lincoln towers above the others who have held the office of president - the icon of greatness, the pillar of strength whose words bound up the nation's wounds. His presidency is the hinge on which American history pivots, the time when the young republic collapsed of its own contradictions and a new birth of freedom, sanctified by blood, created the United States we know today. His story has been told many times, but never by a man who himself sought the office of president and contemplated the awesome responsibilities that come with it.

" Kind or like a cliff notes version. Not very useful if you're doing much reading about lincoln beyond this book. But I did enjoy the critical discussion of Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus during the civil war. "

" I've read at least twenty books on Lincoln, and Senator McGovern's wonderfully nuanced portrait of the man is among the best. In less than 200 pages is gives a sense of the greatness of Lincoln and teaches us a thing or two about the greatness of the author. "

" At just over 150 pages, this bio necessarily skims the surface, but it's a good primer. McGovern, a former history professor, writes clear & serviceable if unexciting prose. "

" Well written but nothing really new. McGovern is a liberal and so he enthusiastically praised much of Lincoln's expansion of Federal powers. "

" I enjoyed reading this succinct biography of Abraham Lincoln. It's only 155 pages long, and it triggered a bunch of other things that I would like to study more in detail with regards to his life. "

" So sorry I missed an opportunity to meet the author in person. Liking the book so far. "
