“Although there is plenty of history embedded in the novel, A Wish After Midnight is written with a lyrical grace that many authors of what passes for adult literature would envy.” —Paula L. Woods, The Defenders Online
“Zetta Elliott’s time travel novel A Wish After Midnight is a bit of a revelation…It’s vivid, violent, and impressive history.” —Colleen Mondor, Bookslut
Genna is a fifteen-year-old girl who wants out of her tough Brooklyn neighborhood. But she gets more than she bargained for when a wish gone awry transports her back in time. Facing the perilous realities of Civil War–era Brooklyn, Genna must use all her wits to survive. In the tradition of Octavia Butler’s Kindred and Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, A Wish After Midnight is the affecting and inspiring tale of a fearless young woman’s fight to hold on to her individuality and her humanity in two different worlds.

"I really enjoyed this book. Probably the first book in awhile that I couldn't put down. I really loved Genna, and how honest her thoughts were. She really did sound exactly like a 16 year old. Ms Elliot did an amazing job of showing how people always have two sides. I did not particularly care for Genna's love interest, Judah. My only real complaint with the book was the ending. It left so many questions, but also maybe the possibility for a sequel?"

" really liked the ending... I thought it was touching! "
— Samantha, 1/28/2014" I hate that I can't rate this book more highly - it had some excellent moments, and overall I love Elliott's style and use of language. For me, it was too close in plot and development to Octavia Butler's Kindred. Wish After Midnight is like the teenage version of Butler's wrenchingly intense novel. "
— Aerin, 12/30/2013" Thirty pages from the end! "
— Tanita, 12/15/2013" You will be hard pressed to find another YA that has the complexity, accessibility, creativity and social relevance this novel carries. This is reminiscent of Bulter's _Kindred_. Here, the protag is young. If you thought Dana had to bear more than a human being should have to bear, imagine being 15. "
— Susan, 5/18/2013" I enjoy both time travel and historical stories, but this one didn't quite meet up to my expectations. "
