"As gripping, ugly, brutal, and sickening as a car wreck in slow motion. Moreso, actually, on all counts. Some things challenge credibility. I found the protagonist and his wife to be strangely cold and callous, and some of their decisions remarkably stupid. I nearly stopped reading the book at one point for its relentless shredding of anything resembling humanity or warmth. But I couldn't put it down and finished in record time. Remarkably well written, particularly for a debut."
— Ken (4 out of 5 stars)
“Read this book. It is better than any suspense novel since Silence of the Lambs.”
— Stephen King“Spectacular…Ten shades blacker and grimmer than the novels of John Grisham…Do yourself a favor. Read this book.”
— Entertainment Weekly (A+ rating)“Expertly crafted…Will make you feel like an unindicted co-conspirator. To say more about the plot would ruin the pleasure of reading the book for yourself.”
— People“Like watching a train wreck. There is nothing to be done, but it is impossible to turn away.”
— Chicago Tribune“[An] astonishingly adept, ingeniously plotted debut thriller.”
— Publishers Weekly“An eerily flat confessional whose horror is only deepened by its flashes of tenderness. Think of a backwater James M. Cain, or a contemporary midwestern Unforgiven—and don't think about getting any sleep tonight.”
— Kirkus Reviews" I hated the story. Well written but I found it very depressing. "
— Kristin, 2/14/2014" I'm vacillating between 2 and 3 stars. It's a fine piece of work of the type that clenches your gut with tension and horror. "
— Julie, 2/6/2014" Very well written - and downright horrifying. "
— Jaina, 2/5/2014" Love the suspense. When the brothers and friend find the money, it changes their lives. I found the description of how the money and paranoia changed their thinking very believable. "
— Yazmin, 1/21/2014" not good--too violent "
— Terri, 1/15/2014" Three guys come upon a crashed plane with over $4,000,000 on it. They agree to keep the money but to wait a while to split it up to make sure nobody's looking for it. A simple plan . . . with predictable results. This is an excellent book of the type, well written, insightful, engaging in its exploration of the darker corners of the human soul: a literary crime novel. "
— Dominick, 1/14/2014" An engrossing story of how one decision can spiral into disaster after disaster. Although this is an old tale of greed, suspicion and murder, I enjoyed this quick paced book. "
— Meda, 1/13/2014" It was a good book. Well written and the characters were well developed. A little on the depressing side though, but still a good read. I also definitely recommend reading his other book "The Ruins." "
— MigsBooks, 1/12/2014" i read this book a number of years ago, and it has really stuck with me. i've picked it for my IRL book club to read for october, so i'm re-reading it now. "
— alisonwonderland, 11/9/2013" A fast read but got a little ridiculous towards the end of the book. Great excitement and fast paced writing but I was hoping for more plot twist. "
— Nili, 10/26/2013" I loved this book! I can see why Gillian Flynn recommended it. So intense. I am sorry it is over. It literally made my heart race. "
