Two years after my mother died, my father fell in love with a glamorous blonde Ukrainian divorcee. He was eighty-four and she was thirty-six. She exploded into our lives like a fluffy pink grenade, churning up the murky water, bringing to the surface sludge of sloughed-off memories, giving the family ghosts a kick up the backside. Sisters Vera and Nadezhda must put aside a lifetime of feuding to save their émigré engineer father from voluptuous gold-digger Valentina. With her proclivity for green satin underwear and boil-in-the-bag cuisine, she will stop at nothing in her pursuit of Western wealth. But the sister's campaign to oust Valentina unearths family secrets, uncovers fifty years of Europe's darkest history and sends them back to roots they'd much rather forget...

" A funny read. It took a few pages to warm to it though. The father in this story lives in his own little world. He was thoroughly frustrating for his daughters. I liked the writing. It gave the feeling of English spoken by those not born to it. And the observations of human nature were so true. "

" Both moving and funny, this is the story of a family, Mom is dead, sisters are not speaking and Dad(86) marries a 30ish bimbo to help her get a visa to live in England. Well worth the time. "

" I think the author of this book was trying to write a humorous, politically correct work of fiction about different generations of Ukrainian immigrants living in the United Kingdom. However, the end result felt much more mean-spirited than the author may have originally intended. I found the characters to all be very two-dimensional and the subject matter itself did not lend itself well to humour, or at least not within this writer's abilities to write humorously. I found the scenes in which the 84 year old father of the main character was being abused by his younger Ukrainian gold-digging bride to be very upsetting, and the attempts at humour and to look more in depth at the other characters' points of views were inappropriate and too little too late. This left a bad taste in my mouth. "
