Publisher Description

Three years ago, working vice for the NYPD, Dan Champion uncovered a sex slavery ring run by a kingpin known only as the Fat Woman. Obsessed with bringing her down, Champion infiltrated a world of sexual obsession and perversity. He broke the case, but the case also broke him. He started taking drugs and soon began to form hallucinations … a dead child prowling the streets of New York … a beautiful woman named Samantha who would have given him the love he always wanted—if she'd only been real. Now Champion is a small town detective, chasing burglars and juvenile delinquents, hanging out at the local tavern where he is romancing a waitress. The ghosts and hallucinations are finally behind him as he begins to rebuild his life. Then one night Champion is called to examine the body of a woman who has washed ashore. Yet when he looks at her face, he sees that it's Samantha, the woman he dreamed about long ago … a woman who doesn't exist. Suddenly, Champion is haunted again, only this time it's by a team of expert killers who want to make sure he never finds the truth: the truth about the dead child who wanders through his imagination; the truth about the lover who inhabits his dreams; and the truth about a killer who has been on the run—in the wind—for a lifetime. The ghosts of the dead are all around him, and Champion has to find out who murdered them, fast, or he could become one of them himself.

"I started reading this novel at my daughter's house while babysitting. Her version was from the Cherry Valley, Illinois library. As soon as we left her home in Rockford, I stopped at the Cherry Valley Mall and bought the book - that's how exciting this novel is!!! I want to read more about the protagonist in MORE novels! Fast-paced, keeps you turning pages, as a writer, the story made me want to stand up and applaud for Andrew Klavan!"

Quotes

  • “The most original American novelist of crime and suspense since Cornell Woolrich.”

    — Stephen King, praise for the author
  • “After reading his latest, A Killer in the Wind I came away convinced that Klavan is worthy to be mentioned with Keith Ablow, Jonathan Kellerman, Andrew Vachss, James Patterson, and even Stephen King.”

    — Huntington News
  • “This taut, frightening psychological thriller from Edgar winner Klavan charts the efforts of Dan Champion, a deputy in Tyler, NY, to find a criminal who may not exist…The edgy story complements a lead character whose fragile memory can’t always separate the real from the imaginary.”

    — Publishers Weekly (starred review)
  • “Evokes the gritty classics of Cornell Woolrich and Jim Thompson while spinning its own brand of hard-boiled psychological suspense. Among its other distinctions, this book gives us a detective who is tough enough to outlast the most bizarre encounters but isn’t too tough to be gripped with fear.”

" Great new thriller who's an absolute master of the craft as well as a personal favorite of mine. The folks who populate his work are so lifelike and so real you'll recognize most of them and swear you used to live next door to one or two of them. Put it on your summer reading list and have a blast. "

" Another great Klavan work. I have to say this is darker than his other recent work, but the same themes are explored: identity, what makes us who we are, mankind's capacity for evil and search for redemption. Very violent and definitely not for the faint-hearted, but a worthy read. "

" I didn't like the ploy of the drug this guy took as a way of telling most of the story. Kind of like being clairvoyant -an easy trick to advance the plot. It just didn't work for me. Not a bad plot, but the way it was written didn't appeal to me. "

" A spectacular mystery/thriller. Warning: involves child abductions. A gripping plot. Outstanding prose. The cliche "page turner" applies fully here. I couldn't stop reading and couldn't wait to find out the ending. "

" Once I got used to the style of this book, a kind of film noir narration, I fell into this thriller . . . a good, page-turning read about one man's search for some very creepy people with a little bit of romance thrown in for flavor. "
