A tragic father, Musatov, is lucky to have very dedicated children. Musatov is a drunkard who is constantly seeking out money from his sons. His children indulge their father continually, even though he doesn’t deserve it for all the trouble he causes them and the fact that he has nothing to give them in return.

In this short story, Musatov speaks at length with one of his sons about the pride and appreciation he feels for all of his sons, acknowledging his own flaws.

Anton Chekhov was a Russian physician, dramatist and author who is considered to be one of the greatest writers in history. His stream-of-consciousness short stories, written near the end of the 19th century, spurned a new literary genre that would later be echoed in works of several great writers, including James Joyce and William Faulkner. Chekhov’s stories are essential reading for all literary enthusiasts.

About the Author
Author Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov (1860–1904), the author of hundreds of short stories and several plays, is regarded by many as both the greatest Russian storyteller and the father of modern drama. He described the Russian life of his time using a deceptively simple technique devoid of obtrusive literary devices, thereby becoming the prominent representative of the late nineteenth-century Russian realist school. His early stream-of-consciousness style strongly influenced the literary world, including writers such as James Joyce.
